Unsigned Spotlight: BEEA

The solo project of Portugal alternative rock songstress Beatriz Hilario, BEEA has made a significant impact in a short space of time.

Please list your name.

Beatriz Hilário

For starters, what bands were you a part of prior to your solo project, BEEA?

I was in a post hardcore band called All Splintered Memories back when I was 16 and then I had a pop-punk band called From Kids To Heroes from 2011 to 2015.

What’s the origin of that name?

My name is Beatriz and everyone calls me Bea, so I decided to just add an extra “e” to make it stand out more.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

So far all my songs talk about love during a very specific time in my life. My whole Paranoia EP revolves around that because I felt the need to let it out in order to move on to the next chapter.

I’m sure that will change in the future, specially because there’s plenty of other stuff I want to talk about, and I am very excited for that!

What artists are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Definitely PVRIS, Tonight Alive and Against The Current. I get very inspired by watching and hearing all those beautiful and talented ladies!

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to get into music?

Well, I was 6 years old when I saw Avril Lavigne’s Complicated video on MTV, and since that day I never stopped singing!

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

I’m a total nerd when it comes to voice techniques and exercises, and I love taking good care of my instrument. I try to wake up early to start warming up my voice as soon as I can. Then, 3-4 hours before a show I do a whole scheme of voice exercises and I also like to use my steamer.

Right before I go on stage I sing a little bit just to get me in the zone.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Being the opening act for Against The Current twice in Portugal. That was one of the best experiences of my life.

If you could tour with any musical act, past or present, who would they be and why?

I would definitely tour with my favorite singer, Lights. That would be a dream come true.

She seems like a very nice and kind person and the amount of talent she has is unbelievable. I think she could definitely teach me a lot of things and give me pretty good advice.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you take a look at my social media or get to know me even for 5min I think you’ll realize that I am a huge Disney fan! That’s why I’m currently working on some new covers… I’m basically having the time of my life now!
