Track by Track: Wild Once - We Did It Anyway

The sophomore EP from Wild Once exudes heart-on-sleeve emo, intertwining with intricate indie hooks and honest & accessible lyricism; nods to the breakout indie/emo scene from the early ‘10s on show here. Check out their commentary on the EP below.

Alone by Choice

This song is about the overwhelming waves of emotion that can come over us when we least expect it. As busy adults with so much to accomplish, we often overlook how we feel or simply don’t have enough time to even contemplate it until it reveals itself when we least expect it.

In these moments where we feel more deeply, increased empathy may be present as we contemplate what other people may be going through in their own lives and how that truly feels.

Your Sins

This was the last track to come together for the EP. In some ways it is the contradiction to ‘Alone by Choice’. It’s sort of about the ways we might manipulate our own thoughts or purposely keep as busy as possible in favor of self preservation when dealing with difficulties in our lives. At the same time, this is an acknowledgment of that and a plea to myself to put one foot in front of the other.

The Meadows

I wrote this song on a flight to Las Vegas from sort of a fly on a wall perspective to what one might call a rather superficial conversation. I don’t write lyrics before music as often as I might like, but the results of this style of writing are often my favorites. Las Vegas was just a layover for me, but there was a group of ‘gentlemen’ in full party mode and this is what I got out of it.

We Knew it Would Come to This

This song almost ended up on our first EP, but we ran out of time and it just wasn’t feeling tight enough at the studio that day. The lyrics to this song started off as a blurb our drummer Matt sent to me when he was going through a tough breakup a couple of years ago.

Lucky for me, as a typical human being, I was able to relate to this subject matter and work it into a song. It’s the overwhelming feeling that pushes us to try things even when we have a hunch those things might not work out.

Trophy Girls

‘Trophy Girls’ is all about the missing connections in the digital world. I wrote this song over a weekend in Pittsburgh where I spent the entire trip alone. It’s a feeling I also touch on a little bit in ‘Your Sins’. How often do we catch each other staring at our phones these days? It’s to the point where we often don’t even feel rude whipping them out in the middle of a real life conversation, be it personal or professional situations.

We use them to fill the fill the silence, that we get so bored and uncomfortable with, so quickly. It makes us more lonely and yet we think it is the solution for loneliness. We weigh our options. We’re curious about what else is happening where we are not. We’re addicted.
