The Black Keys, the band that brought us highly acclaimed albums like El Camino, Brothers, and more are back with this newest album titled, Turn Blue.
Needless to say, this album delivered what some fans wanted and others didn't. Like any musical group, they matured and adapted their sound. Although, sometimes that leads to poor albums and material the fans don't want. I don't think we can say that about this album.
The first track titled " Weight of Love" pulls you right in and lets you have a taste of the album. Just enough of a taste to keep you wanting more.
After seven minutes, The Black Keys introduce you to "In Time" which shows you everything they've got to offer. You hear sensational guitars, relaxing drum beats, that fun vocal style they never seize to provide, and a rhythm that makes you bob your head and tap your foot.
The title track creates more of a relaxing atmosphere to the album immediately. There's something about all the simplicity in the track that comes together as well as exuberant sounds to create this great track.
The next track was placed beautifully on the album. "Fever" comes elegantly off "Turn Blue", to produce a calm before the storm kind of effect. That being said, "Fever" is fun and energetic but still capturing that chill feel of the album.
The track, "Bullet in the Brain" delivers even more relaxation to the package and adds some old school feel to it as well. Then, out of no where picks up the tempo and puts a smile on any listeners face.
"It's Up To You Now" feels like it jumped straight out of The Twilight Zone at the start. The song progresses and a few leads are belted out on guitar and any listener is left with their jaw open on the first listen.
"Waiting On Words" was the only truly boring song on the album. It didn't have much to offer musically, except a catchy chorus. Otherwise it just feels like filler.
At this point listeners think the album is going downhill but it quickly picks up with "10 Lovers" which proves very fun throbs on the drum.
Needless to say this album is very impressive. It provides energetic rock rhythm pieces as well as relaxed songs that make me feel like I've teleported back in time to Woodstock. This album has not only diversity in track feeling but exciting guitar leads, hot drum beats, and strange spine tingling sounds. Well done The Black Keys you have exceed expectations.

The podcast has been going strong for about a year and we've recently hit our 50th episode. The amount of money I'm trying to raise will pay for new podcast equipment which will bring better quality to the show and allow for bigger guests. Please help if you can, even if "help" simply means reposting this on all of your various social media networks and telling all of your friends about it. The podcast/website cannot be popular until you decide it is. Barring the untimely demise of the internet itself, the project should have few difficulties which prevent fulfillment. You don't want to be one of those people that didn't help out, do you?
This album didn't feel like Miss May I. Miss May I never excelled in the field of metal-core, but at least they had notable moments in their careers. Rise of the Lion makes you forget all about those moments, because this isn't Miss May I.
With Being as an Oceans first album “Dear G-d” which no doubt about it had a highly religious background with lyrics such as:
“Lord, we're terrified
But dive in we must
Cause there has to be something better than this
For we see testimony of You in the sea
Your creation, all of nature” from the song The Sea Always Seems to Put me at Ease.
or even from the song Humble Servant
“Blessings of faith, when I have only a mustard seed
For every hardship in my life
I'll hold Your name and I'll do just fine
All praise are Yours and none are mine”
The new album How We Both Wondrously Perish is less about religion and more about relationships and home. With being a fan of Being as an Ocean, I am a fan of their instrumentals. This album lacks the luscious sweeping from ear to ear from the instrumentals and instead you can hear Joel Quartuccio over the melodies, which have changed from melodic hardcore to more of a modern Post hardcore. The clean vocals from Michael McGough match well with this album, but still have a lighter tone with it.
I think after losing two members’, Jacob Prest and Connor Denis they lost their bond. I saw them July 2013 with Hundredth and Counterparts, and they had a upbeat stage performance compared to March 2014 I could tell something was lost. They kept their performance to a short minimum, but with the old members everyone was enjoying themselves. What does this have to do with this new album? You need to have a bond with the people you write music with for it to have a meaning and a purpose to the people who listen to it.
I question why I had so high hopes of Being as an Ocean. Could it be that they spent too much time on this album that they just decided to release it since they did not release anything for two years. Most of the tracks on the new album have the same feeling to it. When I listen to an album I want to feel different levels of emotion for that album. I don’t just want to joyous, I want to feel that and something in my life that is absent, but also regret. An album should make us feel. A connection to an album will make all the difference.
How We Both Wondrously Perish comes out May 6th on Invouge records.
