Evergreen Terrace's newest release “Dead Horses” brings a sound that combines breakdowns like The Ghost Inside, singing melodies resembling A Day To Remember, and even a hint of influence from bands like Lostprophets. “Dead Horses” sports a bit more tamed material than the band's earlier sound but fans are reacting positively to it and overall the album was good. They bring a bit more originality to the hardcore style by mixing sounds of heavy breakdowns as well as punk singing but in a less traditional way.
The most notable song off the album that would represent the band's sound is “The Fortunate Ones”. This song shows each aspect of the band's style of ambiance, punk as well as hardcore. Each song on the album fits in well with the rest but has their own contributions. While listening to the album, I couldn't help but compare them to The Ghost Inside but not in a negative way. Evergreen Terrace takes such a similar sound but puts more creativity and style into it than I think The Ghost Inside does. Evergreen Terrace is a great example that the hardcore genre is growing and maturing every day. More sounds and styles are being developed by more and more bands out there and this album proves that.
Most of the negatives on the album are a bit nit-picky but still prevalent. Many of the clean vocal melodies resemble punk/post-hardcore bands like A Day To Remember a bit too much. I found that the singers voice and tone when singing cleans was a bit too generic. He seemed to play it safe by only staying on the same few notes during each clean part and while this is popular, it's not always interesting and can occasionally kill the mood.
Although the vocals could be a bit of a buzz-kill sometimes, the instrumentation more than made up for it. The backing to each song was some of the most interesting and original material I've heard. Seamlessly transitioning from punk to hardcore to ambient, Evergreen Terrace shows that mixing a bit of each style can prove to produce very fresh sound, when balanced. If you haven't had a chance to get your hands on this album, pick it up as soon as you can if you are looking for a new album to add to your collection of great music this year.
