When approaching this record, we’d decided on a somewhat southern-rock, garage-y, understated vision in terms of production.  Too many alt-rock records these days suffer from sounding too shiny, too polished, too precise.  We wanted the squeaks and the crackles.  Tom Mitchener was more than capable of helming this vision, being a fan of a lot of records that we admired stylistically and where we felt we sat most comfortable and ultimately, like some of us, was not a metaller but an indie kid at heart.

As such we set ourselves strict guidelines in order to keep the record sounding organic, honest and real, and not stripped of all soul: No click track or beat matching; No autotuned vocals;  As little overdrive as possible; Little to no pro-tools after-effects; The older the effects pedals the better; and finally, Fender Rhodes keyboards thrown all over the fucking place at every opportunity (the actual vintage keyboard you have to plug into a guitar amp, and not a pro-tools plug-in).

 Track 1: Mary Rose’d

One of the earliest songs we wrote.  Jamie had been kicking around with the verse bassline long before Eager Teeth had set foot in a practice room.  The song is about a person that is a complete idiot to their own fate and chooses to ignore their own downward spiral and decline.  It’s full of lots of delicious religious and satanic references, all the stuff we love.

 Track 2: Baby, I Don’t Wanna Know

The title of this track is the chorus line from the Fleetwood Mac song ‘Silver Spring’, sung by Stevie Nicks.  Lyrically, it’s about people who are full of themselves; coming from Brighton, you get to know a lot of these types, they’re everywhere.  Slimy, shallow, self-promoting simpletons with overblown senses of self-importance who swan around like they own the place and don’t listen to a word from you.  "Sharing air gets harder to bear, with these tongues lapping at my life force as I’m trying to rest".

There’s a nice little call-and-response vocal interplay going on in the middle 8 of this song, but the best bit is the backing vocals – we wanted to got our good friend Rachel James (ex-singer of Gary’s former indie bands Cinema and The Unboyfriendables) in to create the effect of a chorus of girls in the background, emulating the outro from Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd (can’t get more southern rock than that).

 Track 3: New Bones

The second song we wrote.  This is our version of “the circle of life”. It touches on the theory of the movement of energy - not necessarily reincarnation but how we’re all just borrowing carbon.

"We’ll be born, but with new bones and you won’t know".

 Track 4: Golden Tongues

This song’s about the treacherous path to fame and glory.  Most people would be prepared to do anything to get ahead – but at what cost?  If in order to get to get to the top you deliberately compromise who you are by trying to fit to a crowd at the price of your integrity, you might get liked/loved/successful but hey, your opinion no longer counts for anything in my eyes.

“We sold our tongues to taste the gold.”  We also very much enjoyed the lyric “boys just wanna have fun”.  And the line “will I be seeing you in hell”, was kept as a nod to Die, Die My Darling by Misfits. We love the Misfits.

Jamie wrote a fairly skanking bass-line for the verses of this song, and musically the rest of it kinda evolved around that.  We were hoping for some hint of 70s punk in there somewhere, though how well that translates is beyond me.

Track 5: Constant Entertainment

A nice slow number for all you love-cats out there.  This song was so simple in its construction – it’s just two fucking chords all the way through! – but we feel it was a good example of showing our ability to change dynamic at a moment’s notice if we wanted to.  We tried to give it a vibe similar to Waiting Room by Fugazi, though on closer inspection it could also fit in with Lose Yourself by Eminem, haha.

The crazy-ass noises in the middle-8 come courtesy of a Fuzz Probe pedal, which literally had a mind of its own.  Lyrically this is about a relationship, any relationship, whatever that may be, when one side is doing all the work. “Hey, I should be getting paid, there’s enough to carry for two”.

Track 6: The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things

The first short keyboard interlude. Gary played this on a Fender Rhodes which Mitch had in the studio The song sounds quite gentle and pleasant, but you should read the book of the same name by JT Leroy which it’s named after – it is pretty bleak to say the least.  We always imagined this album to someday have a vinyl release, and this would be the last track on Side One as a little chime to remind you to turn the record over, like in those Ladybird books with a cassette to read along to – “BBBRRING! Please turn the page.”

Track 7: I Decided Long Ago Never To Walk In Anyone Bigger Than Me’s Shadow

This is a straight-up, double-time, 40 second pop punk song about doing what you want, not comparing yourself to anything and not sucking the proverbial dick. Oddly enough it never had a name until partway through the recording process, where after a conversation about the book/film American Psycho we decided to paraphrase a line from Whitney Houston’s The Greatest Love Of All… and two days later she died.

When we initially started tracking this we wanted all of us to record their parts drunk, but time ran short for unnecessary drinking… Nick did the drums shitfaced at least.  And perfectly.  What a prick.

Track 8: Exorcise Bike

This song wrote itself in about 2 minutes.  It was very fun to play on the record.  I guess it’s about choosing the right path between good and evil… "I never planned to be your fork stuck in the road, but which god is it you chose?"  It was an obvious favourite of Mitch’s, so much so that we really went to town on it – Big Muffs, multi-layered guitar parts, juicy keyboards, the lot.  The backing vocal melody over the chorus was lifted directly from On Our Own by Bobby Brown, as featured in Ghostbusters 2 (no shit).

Track 9: Somehow

This was the original suggestion for the first track on the album, and as such there’s a version where the guitar intro goes on for a deliberately infuriating duration (about 45 seconds) – jury’s out as to whether it would have been a better opener.  It showcases a lot too – slips from hip-hop style jolty drums to balls-out hardcore quite deftly.  Definitely an angry song, about not wanting to conform.

Track 10: Your Life Could Change

Our vocalist Will states that “This song is very personal to me lyrically”, as it was inspired by “a child that was dealt a rough hand and made bad decisions from an early age. RIP Jon.”

And a bit of trivia – this song had the working title Abba (on account of its A-B-B-A song structure) for so long, one provisional title was No More Ace To Play (a lyric from The Winner Takes It All).  But Will said no.

Track 11: Lights Out

Where it all began. This song is about those among us that never really wake up and grab life, the sponges of society and walking dead. “This won’t be yours”.  At the start of it all we thought this song sounded a bit like Paramore to our dismay (“but I like Paramore!” – says Gary), but the vocals breathed a whole new life into it.

Track 12: La Fin Absolue

The title comes from a fictitious film-within-a-film called La Fin Absolue Du Monde, from the John Carpenter horror short Cigarette Burns.  Apparently if you watch La Fin… you will go mad and kill yourself and everyone around you.  We’d initially called this song End Of The World Song, as Arran thought it sounded ‘like the end of the world’.  This track was simply meant to be a way we could end the album on one long, looming, building crescendo, which builds and builds and builds – then suddenly drops to dead space…

Track 13: I Don’t Wanna Know (Reprise)

This is the dead space.  An acapella, gospel-style R&B sing-off with group handclaps (and just a Rhodes for accompaniment).  We were always fixated with the idea of making a loud rock record that ends deliberately quietly, just to be annoying.  The idea behind this was to recreate something along the lines of the fade out of the Boyz II Men song End Of The Road… and that’s exactly what we did.  This was one of our favorite moments in making the record. Expect more of this on record 2.

As a band we have one of the luckiest things going, our bassist Rich Bettlestone has a recording studio and is himself a recording engineer. So when we were writing our debut EP, we would do something at practice and be able to get it recorded the next day, so the idea was down. We were able to do many demos of many songs and really work on ones with the most potential. We feel these six tracks are a good introduction of ourselves.

1. Chapters
We felt “Chapters” would really start the EP off in the right way, with a bang. With this track we wanted to write a song that had no “Power Chords”, and as a result, it really creates the uplifting sound that we were aiming for. Lyrically we thought it should match that sentiment; it’s about when you were young and had no worries, you just had fun.

2. Dance Alone
With this track we were aiming for a big catchy chorus that would hopefully leave people humming it hours after hearing it. It’s a fun, lighthearted song about drinking too much and dancing the night away without a care in the world.

3. Taken Under
This was the first song we ever wrote, and probably the hardest as this would kind of be the sound we would be. It’s about one of band member’s family and his brother, struggling with drug addiction and how it affected them, but still knowing their family will always help each other all they can. He had actually written the basics of this song about 4 years ago on his boss mini recorder.

4. Embers
This is simply about how Matt’s house burnt down a few days before Christmas once. It was the middle of the night and he was asleep, it had a major effect on him, but it would have been a lot worse. We had the lyrics first for this one, so it was enjoyable and interesting writing the music around them, allowing us to add to the effect of the words.

5. A Thousand Things
We aimed for an ambient upbeat sound that had a continual drive on this track. We had the music recorded first with a melody but no ideas for lyrics for quite a while. But listening to the track felt very uplifting, so we wanted to dedicate it to a very good friend who lost his battle with Leukemia too young, but through it all he never lost his smile. It can sometimes take extreme things to make us realize we should be living life as best we can. A true inspiration.

6. Riverside
This was half a song that Matt had been sitting on for years before he brought it to a practice. It is our most mellow song to date and fast became one of our favorites. It’s a track that we can’t wait to play either at a show or even on a Monday night at band practice. And we think it’s a good way to finish off the EP.

Canadian melodic metal outfit, Shreddy Krueger, has announced that they will be hitting the studio in March with Jeff Schneeweis (Anaberlin, Hawthorne Heights, Secret And Whisper) to record their debut full length album. The album will be a follow up to their EP “Curses” that was released this past fall. The new record is slated for a late summer / early fall release via InVogue Records.

UK quartet Fights and Fires play what can be described as Hardcore ‘N’ Roll, but ‘Geekcore’ is a similarly befitting label when their members consist of a trained wrestler, a rollercoaster addict, an obsessive completer of video games and, erm, a father to a hedgehog!

With this in mind, we took the opportunity to find out from vocalist Phil, what he regards to be the best wrestling DVD releases to date. Evidently, despite ditching the lycra for the stage at 16, he is still a fan of the sweaty man on man action, and now you can be in the know to!

#1: ECW - The Rise And Fall Of -
ECW started off as a small fish in a big pond that then went on to change the face of professional Wrestling. Popularising the hardcore, blood and guts style of wrestling that WWE later took influence from, to create the attitude era (by far the most popular era for WWE). This saw WWE make a move from the family friendly entertainment of Hulk Hogan, to more a raunchy adult friendly product, in the late 90’s.

This DVD shows the humble beginnings in Bingo Halls of Philadelphia, to a Global scale, before its demise in 2001. This is the second best selling Wrestling DVD of all time… not bad, for what started as a independent wrestling company, in front of a few hundred fans.

#2: WWE - Wrestle Mania X-7 -
Wrestle Mania is the biggest event in the annual wrestling calendar and just like all roads lead to Rome, in Wrestling all roads lead to … Wrestle Mania! I had to include at least one WM in my top 10 list and this is my favourite. The main event saw two of the biggest stars in wrestling history collide. THE ROCK went in to battle with “STONE COLD” STEVE AUSTIN.

The show ended when Steve Austin turned his back on the fans by siding with his long time nemesis and owner of the WWE, Vince McMahon, in a shocking turn of events. Austin then went on to win the Heavyweight Title, after 16 brutal chair shots!

#3: WWE King Of The Ring 1998 -
I have always loved wrestling but between about 95-97 I found myself becoming less interested… maybe it was growing up… THEN this happened and I was hooked for life. Mick Foley is a professional wrestler like no other, he looks like your friends friendly uncle, only, when that bell rings he turns into a madman with no care for his own safety. Mick Foley has worked under many names, including Mankind, Dude Love and Cactus Jack. This was the night he became a megastar.

Mick Foley (as Mankind) had one of the most talked about wrestling matches, of all time against THE UNDERTAKER, inside The Hell In The Cell. It saw Foley thrown 15+ feet through a table and battling on with visible injuries,Z to put on one of gutsiest performances ever seen in the ring.

#4: CM PUNK - Best In The World -
CM PUNK is one of the true bright stars of the last 10 years, battling his way up the independent wrestling scene, often wrestling in front of 20-30 people, very much in the same way DIY bands do. Featuring interviews with Lars, from Rancid and Music from H20 and Bouncing Souls. This documentary really shows his love for Punk Rock and how he has carried that influence with him into WWE, to become one of the biggest stars on his own terms.

#5: Beyond The Mat (1999) -
This was a real eye opener as a Wrestling fan and helped open the door for these kind of open and candid documentariesbabout what was always a rather secretive sport/entertainment. It follows the life of three wrestlers, one at the height of his career (Mick Foley, aka “Mankind”), one contemplating retirement (Terry Funk) and one at a career low (Jake “The Snake” Roberts).

At times, this is very dark and bleak, but, I feel it helps you to understand the risks and pain these people go through to follow a dream many consider a joke..oh and its also packed full of funny stories too!

#6: The Monday Night Wars -
Another fun documentary which follows the timeline of the ratings war between WWE Monday Night Raw and WCW Monday Nitro. The two biggest Wrestling companies aired shows at the same time and this documentary tells the story of just how far they were willing to go, to win the War.

#7: WWE - Royal Rumble 2000 -
Royal Rumble is by far my favourite wrestling event of the year! It features a 30 man, over the top rope elimination match, that never fails to entertain. It was hard for me to pick just one Royal Rumble but I went with the 2000 Edition, as it featured not only an exciting Royal Rumble match, but a great under card of bouts also. Cactus Jack vs. Triple H is one of the greatest Street Fights in the history of wrestling which features pins, barbed wire and chairs. It is one of my favourite ever matches.

#8: ECW - Barely Legal 1997 -
ECW’s first PPV, which, from top to bottom, is a classic wrestling show. Striping back all the glitter and glamour of WWE and just presenting wrestling… as wrestling. All styles of wrestling are covered in one night, technical wrestling (Rob Van Dam vs. Lance Storm), Hardcore (Sabu vs. Taz) and Hard hitting (The Eliminators vs. The Dudley’s)

#9: Ring Of Honour -  Man UP! -
My passion for wrestling is very similar to my love for music. How, I love the big time feel of seeing bands like Foo Fighters, but I really feel at home in a small venue, watching bands. Well, If WWE is the FOO FIGHTERS, then ROH is the cool DIY band who are signed to your favourite independent label. This was one of the first few times ROH dabbled into the world of doing internet PPV. From top to bottom it was a great card. If you have never heard of Ring Of Honour, I strongly suggest you pick up a DVD.

#10: The Wrestling Road Diaries -
This is a documentary made by the professional wrestler and podcaster Colt Cabana. It journals the life of an independent professional wrestler. From sleeping on a fans floor, to driving 12 hours to make a show, for little to no money, just for the love of it (sounds familiar to band life!).

The comparisons between this life and that of a touring band are extremely similar. Colt Cabana is joined by Bryan Danielson, doing his farewell tour of the independent circuit, before heading to the big leagues of WWE.https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/images/cleardot.gif
