For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Worst Kept Secret? How long has the band been around?
We have been a band since 2014. Shawn, Ben, Jared and Ryan were in a cover band together in high school called The Gnarly Charlie's that played everything from Megadeth to Alkaline Trio. Pat was in a punk trio called On Hold as well as having an acoustic solo career. Pat, Ryan, Ben and Jared also played together in a ska band called We Ain't Disco
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We have never changed the name and the name came from the Fall Out Boy song "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner" the line in that song "I'll be your best kept secret and your biggest mistake" we just thought saying we are the best at anything would be shooting yourself in the foot so we changed best to worst.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Most of the songs start with a riff or chorus that Jared writes, then he and Ryan get together and map out the flow of the song. Then it's typically Ben and Jared sitting for hours writing guitar lines and leads. Bass will sometimes come before that and we tend to do lyrics last. Whatever the style of the song is going is how we usually write lyrics, as far as topics or whatever we are into at the time whether that be a character from WWE (Follow the Buzzards) or O Brother Where Art Thou? (the odyssey). We just like that southern feel.
Topics definitely change over time, we have always had a pop punk influence but our music has strayed away from it. Our live show still has it, we often get compared to blink 182 because we are always making fun of each other on stage and telling dick jokes but our music has an overall southern sound to it.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Every Time I Die, Atreyu, Four Year Strong, Comeback Kid, The Damned Things and we always are influenced by Blink 182 and New Found Glory.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Overall it was blink 182 that got us all into playing music. I think Dammit is kinda the Smoke on the Water of our generation. As far as the metal part of our band I think when avenged sevenfold released 'waking the fallen' is what was the gateway to metalcore and heavy music for us.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Jared and Ben will typically play guitar for like an hour before a show. Ryan will use marching sticks on his drum pad to get his hands warmed up. On the way to a show, Typically we listen to music that's the furthest thing from what we are about to do. Whether that be 90s country, Ghetto Rap or Creed haha. We also have the 2 beer 1 shot rule before shows.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Opening for He is Legend was insane. We also got the chance to open for drowning pool at the altar bar in Pittsburgh before it closed. But biggest personal achievement would be having a CD Release show to a sell out hometown crowd. Going on our first tour with Guns Out at Sundown was so much fun too.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
If we could tour with the 2005 version of Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold and Killswitch Engage that would be insane. But currently we would love to go out with a band like A Day to Remember or Every Time I Die. We love having fun and you can tell that those bands have a lot of fun and don't take themselves too seriously but still kill it every night
Is there anything else you would like to add?
