For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Without Wings? How long has the band been around?

Chris used to be the bass player and clean vocalist for a metal band called Seconds till the End. Roger was the guitarist and clean vocalist for a band called As Chaos Unfolds. I, Simon was the drummer in a band called Red Sky Dawn. The band has been around for about 18 months now.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The old drummer got the name from a song by The Butterfly Effect called Without Wings.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Instrumentally all the songs are written by Simon and Roger, and Chris handles the lyrics. The EP Catharsis deals with quite a few personal issues that Chris has dealt with. Legacy (Beyond My Reach) is about the passing of his Grandfather and the influence that he had on Chris, whilst The Longest Night is a love song of sorts.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I (Simon) can only speak personally, but at the moment I’ve been listening heavily to the new Thrice record To be Everywhere is to be Nowhere. I wouldn’t say their music is directly influencing the sound, but more-so their philosophy behind making music that really is pushing the envelope of what I’d normally write.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I’ve wanted to be a musician for as long as I can remember, and I have my Dad to thank for that. He was a drummer in a lot of bands back when he was in South Africa, and he passed the love of the instrument over to me at a young age.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I’ll a have a beer or two, and Chris will do his vocal warm ups. We’re pretty relaxed.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Our EP release. Our first ever show and we had people screaming the words back to us and moshing. It was a surreal experience for a band playing our first ever show.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

If the world was perfect, we’d play with Thrice and Karnivool. Both bands have been huge for me, their creativity and emotion driven through the music is superb. If you asked Roger, he’d say Nickelback and Bieber or something like that.
