For starters, what bands were you a part of prior to Witchsister, if any? How long has the band been around?

Stephanie- I was in a wee lil folk trio called Taj.

Everyone else has never been in a band prior to this. We have been together for 5 years.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Well we are all sisters/cousin is the drummer. We all have the same last name…….. We were raised in a very spiritual/wiccan environment. So Witchsister seemed perfect. I also really like the two syllable sound as well.

We have never changed our name before.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We all write our own parts. Someone will usually lead with a riff or something and we will write around and towards that, but the song is never crissend STEVIE’S song or SKYLAR’S song.

Main themes- most of them are based around personal experiences and real life situations. Feminism is something that is always referenced or implied. A lot of it is also about what it’s like being a female in the rock and roll scene. For example- interacting with other bands at a gigs or people at the venue. We are constantly being patronized or patted on the back for doing a good job for “girls”. Or even being referred to as girls is bull shit. Im 27 for fucks sake.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Well that is different for all of us.

Skylar- primus, rage against the machine, system of a down

Stevie- Queens of the Stoneage, Justice, Vulfpeck, Snarky Puppy

Kelsey-  styles influence me- funk, punk, latin

Stephanie- Heartless Bastards, The Big Moon, Led Zeppelin

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Stephanie- I wanted to be Robert Plant or Anne Wilson or Janis- haha

Skylar was obsessed with Michael Jackson for a long time as a kid too

Stevie- I saw people on youtube covering anime openings wearing maid cosplays and that made me want to play bass.

What do you do to prepare for a show?

Apart from having rehearsal- not much. Listen to some pump me up music put on weird make up, depending on the show, and hang out. Write out the set list….

Oh yes and we always get pre show shits.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Getting our music video premiered exclusively on music-new.com I think. Going on tour in general is the best as well.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

OH shit. Daikaiju for sure. They are nuts. They light shit on fire. We’ve played a few shows with them and they are sweethearts!

Stephanie- Im a die hard Zeppelin fan so duh- I also would be kinda scared ,some of the stuff I’ve read about their tours was horrible lol.
