For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Wirethrone? How long has the band been around?
James and Josh were in a band called Sanctum together and are the only two original members of Wirethrone. Wirethrone was started in 2011 and went on a breif hiatus in 2013 before reviving and recruiting Adam from Arbitration and Chris from Harmonicide in 2014. We've been together ever since!
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Wirethrone is a song by a band called Solution .45. We just think it's neat.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
The way we write songs is I'll (James) come up with a basic skeleton of a song and then present it to the rest of the band. Adam writes all the melodies and leads and Chris writes all his bass parts. I write most of the lyrics as well with a lot of imput from Josh. Most of the themes I write about are true stories or situations that I've been in. Our new EP Serpent Queen is about feeling controled and manipulated by a person and overcoming those feelings. We may write fantasy lyrics later down the road, but I'm not really that good at fantasy. I'm too blunt for that.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Insomnium are all very big inspirations for my song writing. I love the big riffs we get from In flames, the melancholy lyrics from Dark Tranquillity, and the song structure from Insomnium. Our new EP is really inspired by Insomnium structure wise. They released a 1 song 40 minute long album a few years ago and we just released a 1 song 20 minute long EP
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
In 2008, I saw In Flames and Gojira and that concert pretty much changed my life. The command In Flames had over the crowd was mind blowing
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Basic stretching and legato drills is what I do to warm up before the show. We all have our indiviual routines, but mostly stick to that.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Back in 2018, we opened up three shows for Insomnium and got to hang out with them. Also George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher appeared on our single "I'm Still Breathing" off of our self titled record. You can find that on Spotify and YouTube!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
In Flames or Cannibal Corpse. In Flames is just such a huge influence on me and we love George so the Cannibal tour would be a ton of fun.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We are currently in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign in anticpation of our new EP "Serpent Queen." This EP is 1 song broken into 4 parts that flow seamlessly into one another for one epic journy.
