Unsigned Spotlight: When I Say Jump

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

John Davis-guitar/vocals
Curt Painter-guitar
Jarrod Atkins-bass
Jordan Atkins-drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to When I Say Jump? How long has the band been around?

Myself, Jarrod, and Jordan were part of a technical deathcore band. That fizzled out though, so we started a punk band back in January. I took to playing guitar for this project. After a few months of searching for another guitarist, it finally hit me to ask Curt, who I knew from drum line in middle school. He has been in a couple small projects before us, and is also in a rumble sludge band.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

When we were choosing a new name for our deathcore band, "When I Say Jump" was one of the names that ended up on the cutting room floor. The meaning of the name essentially means "trust in me." We haven't changed it, although we did throw around the idea of changing it to "I Sucker Punched a Psychic."

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We write them together, but I usually come up with a guitar part and vocal pattern, and we springboard off of that. With what we've written so far, there's songs about sex, the regret that can come from it, the loss of close friends, self dependence, and feeling lost in life. It's likely that these will change some over time, but I'm pretty adamant about never writing a love song.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Beartooth, Dance Gavin Dance, Underoath, Secret Band.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I know for Jordan, it was when he saw Whitechapel at Mayhem festival. I don't know what it was exactly that tipped the scales for me, but I know I wanted to be a vocalist because of Fall OUt Boy and The Devil Wears Prada.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We haven't played our first yet, but we start practice by warming up and getting our levels set. I make sure to warm up my vocal cords and drink water.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

The show we're playing on August 1st, definitely. It's gonna be with eight other bands that are pulling at least twenty people each.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Slipknot, The Devil Wears Prada, or Dance Gavin Dance, because they are our favorites. Also, touring with anyone signed to Blue Swan Records, because they have an impressive roster.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Writing and playing with these guys is such an immense pleasure. I live with Jarrod and Jordan, so we're pretty tight knit. Then when we had Curt over to audition, everything just flowed. He has a unique playing style, and he just added so much to the dynamic of the band.
