Unsigned Spotlight: Vilivant

Vilivant is a Canadian hard rocker that quickly gained immediate success in the music scene when she was approached at age 14 to record a song for the Pan Am Games; and consequently decided to start writing her own music. Drawing heavily from influences such as Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless and Three Days Grace she created her first self-titled EP with streams reaching over 25,000 on Spotify.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Vilivant? How long has the band been around?

We've all had our own projects, and some of us are still working on other projects as well as being apart of VILIVANT. We all met online (and or) in music groups, and after months of searching for musicians that would best suit this project, I believe I found an awesome kick ass band!

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Honestly, I wish I had a meaningful and well thought out answer like 'Oh the name came to me in a dream' or 'The name means (insert something meaningful here)'... but I just made the name up. Well... if you want a better answer, I guess you can say the name is a play off of the word/colour 'Violet'. I love stones and crystals and how they transfer positive energy, and that's exactly what the amethyst stone does, and with amethyst being a violet/purple colour I just went off of that.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write all my music with the help of my band mates. I usually start off with a simple skeleton of a song (most of the time its just piano and vocals, or guitar and vocals), and then I bring the idea to my band and we kind of go from there. In terms of themes or topics, It really just depends on what I am feeling in that moment. Most of my songs are written about problems that we are facing in society, dealing with anxiety, and I even like to write about other peoples problems and stories.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Man, that's quite the question. So many artists and bands inspire me everyday. I would say, recently I've been getting into a-lot of the early 'Nine Inch Nail' stuff, Chevelle, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Meg Myers, Flyleaf, Heart, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, AlterBridge... I can go on and on!

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

When I was younger I was involved in a lot of music recitals, talent shows (the who Ka-bam), and I've always been told by the end of my sets that I needed to have a band behind me... so I eventually got together with a bunch of like minded musicians (this was before VILIVANT), and created a cover band to get my toes wet. With the tremendous amount of performing experienced that I garnered with that cover band, I then decided to start a new chapter of my life which was creating original music with my current band 'VILIVANT'.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Usually when it comes to warming up my vocal box I do a bunch of sliding exercises which, for those who don't know are basically the best way to get rid of any vocal breaks and increase vocal range. To any vocalist out there (don't matter the genre) I strongly suggest doing these as they really loosen up your vocal chords! After that, I usually sing a favourite song about 30 minutes before a show just to take the techniques I did with the exercises and apply them to a song.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Hmm, right now with COVID we are kind of at a stand still, and we were suppose to start performing live, but of course we can't do that right now. Though with that being said, even though we can't perform live, we can still do it virtually. Recently the band got selected and won the Toronto region for the Jim Beam National Talent Search organized by Canadian Music Week, which I mean in it's self was a pretty great achievement!

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I can go on and on about who I would love to tour with, but to name a few: Diamante, 3 Days Grace, Chevelle, Meg Myers, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Soundgarden (If Chris was still alive..) Alice in Chains, Heart... e.t.c

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I just released my version of the R.E.M classic 'Losing My Religion.' It's definitely a 're-imagined' version of the song. "Losing My Religion” – an already immensely great song – is turned into a sudden spike of ultra-exciting music that hits, with its dark, grand and euphoric combination of resonant keyboards, guitars and vocals. It’s a perfect display of everything coming together, to deliver an emotion-packed punch.
