Unsigned Spotlight: Verse Vica

Verse Vica are a progressive metal band from Asheville NC.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Spencer Brunkhorst - Vocals

Paul Meisner - Guitar
Greg Nye - Guitar
Tyler Shehan - Bass

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Verse Vica?

Spencer and Paul used to be in a band here in Asheville called Issachar. The style was similar to what we play now, so we kind of think of our sound now as a developement from that.Spencer played guitar in that group, and moved to Vocals for Verse Vica. Greg used to play bass in a band call Enemy At The Six when he used to live in Richmond, VA. This is Tyler's first time in a band!

How long has the band been around?

We've been active for about a year, working on getting this album together and finding members for a full live lineup so we can play shows as soon as possible.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name Verse Vica comes from the term 'Vice Versa', it's just a fun play on words that we got when we applied the meaning of the term to itself.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do
you think these topics will change over time?

Paul wrote most of the music for this album, and Spencer wrote the lyrics. Now that we have more people in the band though, we want future writing to be more of a group effort. Some of the lyrics are based around concepts from video games we grew up playing, and some of the songs have more personal meanings. We like that balance and variety, so we'll probably stick with this approach for a while.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

There are so many, but if we have to name a few they would be Between The Buried and Me, MONO, Thrice, The Contortionist, Scale The Summit, Periphery, August Burns Red, and Coheed and Cambria.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

We love seeing our favorite bands play live, and anytime we get that opportunity it inspires us to work hard on our own music in hopes that we will some day get to the point where we can do the same.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We can't play shows yet until we get a drummer, but when we do we know that warm up exercises are a must, especially with music like this!

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Since we are pretty new, this whole process leading up to the release of our first album has been a very exciting time for us.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Of course we would love to tour with any of the bigger bands that influence us, but touring with newer bands that are breaking out and making a name for themselves now would be super fun too. Groups such as ERRA, Intervals, Thank You Scientist, and Corelia would be awesome to tour with.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We really appreciate you taking the time to interview us, and we hope you enjoy the album!
