Unsigned Spotlight: Verdoux

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Michael Taber (guitar/lead vocals)(General recording and live sound issues)
Steven Villa (Bass/Vocals) (Promotional, social media aspects)
Devin trott (guitar/vocals) (Booking)
Ricky Martinez (Drums) (Merchandise)

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to (Verdoux)? How long has the band been around?

We have been a band collectively for 6 years. The lineup has changed several times, borrowing different members from different parts of the local scene. The current lineup has been together for 2 years, with mike being the longest member.

Mike continued Verdoux When Devin was kicked out in the early stages of Verdoux. Devin shortly joined another local band called Astoria while Steven and Ricky were part of another local band called All Set Go. All three bands actually shared the stage several times before
deciding to all become a part of the same group.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The bands name is derived from a Charlie Chaplain film "Monsieur Verdoux". It is a black comedy with lots of philosophical references. Pretty interesting considering they were all just kids when the band was formed.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The songs are written collectively. Usually Mike will bring in an idea of what he wants to write about and we all dissect it and try and improve upon it, adding our own spins and phrasing.Devin will usually add sparkling lines over simple riffs. Mike and Steven will sit with a finished song and usually tear it apart and try adding different nuances to change the tone or word play.

We tend to write about where we are in our generation...We are group of 20 somethings with college degrees and a sense of emptiness. That usually manifests itself through relationships, alcohol, darker thoughts of isolation and so on. Im sure Topics will change as get older, they already have given our bands previous albums which were bouncy songs about girls in high school.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making? Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

For Mike its usually U2. Anything U2 will inspire Mike.

For Steven (me) it has to be the early emo pop punk era. The fuse channel was all I really had when i was teenager. AFI, blink 182, and taking
back sunday were my only outlet to other kids my age.

Devin loves tiny moving parts so much he has a tattoo on his arm

Ricky blink 182, and the cure, Marching band...odd.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We need to eat. Everything is better with dennys. But we usually like to get in the right head space. We'll warm up with vocal exercises, and maybe do an all hands in kinda thing.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

So far it has to be the completion of our new EP on our current label. We've managed to make it six years and continue make music and play shows. Prior to this It was getting to work with Lou Richards who produced several albums with Sublime and the dirty heads but we kind of realized that liked working and producing by ourselves. Lou was great but we really wanted to keep our music OUR music.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

It would be an odd combination but the energy of circa survive would just be amazing to feel.
The smiths in their prime would be amazing. Id love to morrissey as a backstage Diva.
Also Finish Ticket, we've already played with them several times, theyre just a solid group of guys.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

So Cliche but support your friends and local artists. You never know how much of themselves they put into their work.
