Unsigned Spotlight: TRISTN
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to (insert band/artist name here)? How long has the band been around?
I've been writing songs and performing my own music since I was high school. But I started to write and produce music professionally since January of last year.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Tristan was my mom's pen name when she was a writer. I took on her pen name since I started writing. It's become my name for a while now. It's spelled TRISTN.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I write all my songs. I work with Steve, my producer, who has also helped with writing. I don't really have a specific theme in mind but after writing for a year, over 50 songs later, I realize that I write mostly for people I encounter, either to comfort or to inspire, give courage. I apply my personal experience into the story as much as I can. The one thing that will never change about my writing is having relatable and conversational lyrics.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Thirty Seconds to Mars, Yellowcard, Soundtracks from films.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Not exactly. But if I had to choose, I'd say that My Chemical Romance, Catfish and the Bottleman, and Bjork.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
I don't pack in my routine before the show. A lot of my preparation happens daily. I run almost everyday and during my rehearsals. I've developed a vocal exercise routine so that I can become the performer I want to be, effortlessly. Honestly, before the show, I get my band together and spend some time playing music we like, anything to remind us why we love playing music in the first place.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
I'd have to say, my fans. They have been such an inspiration. So far I've gotten hundreds of emails about how they're inspired by my music and how I'm pursuing my career relentlessly. When I get messages from my fans about how my work has gotten them through their struggles, that's when I feel I'm doing my job.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Definitely My Chemical Romance because every time I saw their show, I always feel like I belong to something that's bigger that just myself.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes, there is! This is only an introduction. I have many more stories to tell and people to entertain.
