For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Three Years? How long has the band been around?
Three Years has been a band now for what will be a full year come January. Prior to this Tyler and I (Scott) had been playing in a pop-punk band Halfway Home. When that folded we found ourselves in a metal band with Brian called New Atlas. Once that band came to an end the three of us brought Nick and Lorenzo on board and Three Years was born.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The idea for Three Years initially came about when Tyler and I were still in Halfway Home and at the time we had been playing music together for three years and had nothing to show for it and then the idea kind of just stuck with us as we went.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
A lot of the instrumentals are written by Brian to start off and then the rest of us provide our opinions and suggestions on what to change. I write all of the lyrics and vocal parts and work them into the instrumental ideas. Sometimes if I come up with a great vocal idea we’ll rebuild the instrumentals of a song around that. On our current EP Devolution I talk a lot about the problems that I see in the world and encouraging the listener to adopt compassion an empathy when examining these issues. It discusses climate change, excessive police violence and our mortality as human beings. Writing about the world’s issues that are of importantance to me has been my focus as a musician for some time now and until resolutions are found I can’t see myself changing course to write about relationships or anything like that.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Our inspiration comes from a wide variety of bands right now like Stray From The Path, Blood Youth, Trapped Under Ice and Stick To Your Guns.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Everyone’s answer to this question would probably be different but I remember watching the live dvd for A Day To Remember’s For Those Who Have Heart and thinking, “that’s what I need to do”.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Typically we go through some warm ups whether that be vocal warmups or the guys running scales/exercises on their guitars or drums. The pre show stretch is critical. You have to do as much as possible to avoid the post show neck pain.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Seeing as we’ve been a band for under a year as of right now we still have a lot we need to and want to do. But releasing our first EP was a major step. We had some fun times too filming our music video and playing a show with Hawthorne Heights and our friends from In Her Own Words back in October.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I think our ultimate tour package including us would be Dillinger Escape Plan, Stray From The Path, Architects and Smash Mouth. We have a lot of respect for all those bands for various reasons and then Smash Mouth released All Star and Shrek was tight.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If we’re ever in your town come hang out with us. Our shows are proving to get pretty wild and we just like to meet as many new people as possible and hang out.
