Unsigned Spotlight: The World Over
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Hi! We are The World Over. I'm Tiaday, the vocalist. Ryan is on guitar and Donovan is on bass!
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The World Over? How long has the band been around?
Before Ryan and I created The World Over with our former members, we were in a band called A Breath Of Scandal (horrible name, I know). My band ABOS and I had moved together from Hawai'i to Los Angeles and Ryan joined us when we met at Los Angeles College of Music. And Donovan was in a band called Castaways before he joined us!
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Our original lineup had consisted of band members from all around the world so we really wanted to have a name that could represent our diverse cultures and continuity. The World Over just felt right and even though our most diverse members couldn't remain in the band, it still holds true to us in other ways. We will take The World Over one fan at a time! Haha. We were originally called Speakers Of Infamy and that never really felt right lol.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
It is I, the vocalist! haha. I usually don't have a reoccurring theme but I mostly write from my perspective on my life and my experiences like "Liberosis" and "Swervewolf". But then there are some songs like "Invisible" and "Traitor" that are just storytelling. I always end my lyrics with a message of hope and empowerment instead of constant complaining like some songs out there and I plan to keep it that way.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
The bands that definitely helped influence our writing in our new album that we just released ("MOUNTAINS") would have to be Deftones, Bring Me The Horizon's newest album and PVRIS.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For me, there wasn't really any particular band that inspired me to do what I'm doing, but at almost every concert I would go to I always felt like I was in the wrong place (in the crowd) and that I needed to be on that stage performing and same with Ryan. So I decided to keep pushing to make that a reality. For Donovan, he saw MCR in 2005 and knew immediately that he wanted to be doing what they were doing.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
I always do vocal warm-ups for a half hour before a show. Small or large; doesn't matter. We always need to put our best foot forward. Donovan listens to completely different music than what he's about to play to get in the zone. Ryan also likes to do basic guitar exercises to get his hands warmed up. We all try to not eat too much before a show so we don't feel weighted down.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We would have to say that going to Canada to record with Siegfried Meier was definitely a great experience for us as a band and an honor to work with him as well. He has done work for Kitty on multiple occasions as well as DMX and many others.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
We aspire to tour with bands like Bring Me The Horizon or Twenty One Pilots because their music is powerful and we feel like they're making a difference in the music industry and we can as well.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes! Lastly all of our merch is available at: theworldover.bandcamp.com
