Unsigned Spotlight: The Undecided Majors

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Scott McCauley - Guitarist/Bassist/Vocalist

Jake Fenton - Drums/Synth

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Undecided Majors? How long has the band been around?

Scott McCauley: I played bass and did some vocals in a cover band in Destin, FL, Furious George, for a summer but that was during The Undecided Majors existence. I’ve done session work before The Undecided Majors. Jake and I were part of the same band, Line 45, throughout high school. The band, the Undecided Majors has been around since summer of 2012.

Jake: Yea we started our first band the summer of 2006 and called ourselves Line 45. We played the occasional local shows and did covers along with our originals. After going through several members we decided it was just easier to be a duo.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Scott: We used to be called Line 45…no idea why we named it Line 45 haha. We decided to go with The Undecided Majors because at the time, there were three of us, and we were all in college. Though with that being said, we had no direction on what we wanted to get our degrees in. It just felt like we were going to school with no purpose. I remember my advisor classified us as “undecided major”. That fit who we were so we went with The Undecided Majors.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Scott: Jake and I both usually write the songs. I start out with an idea and Jake elaborates on it. I do write the lyrics and on this EP Jake definitely helped out with the theme and some of the melodies with the songs. The main themes for most of our songs are anywhere from breakups, to being trapped in unwanted relationships, to everyday life/challenges. I think some of these topics will change over time due to our personal lives changing daily.

Jake: Yea, we write the songs together. While I focus on beats and rhythm. Scott focuses on the chord progressions. We come together for lyrics and melody most of the time.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Scott: A lot of early 2000’s bands and bands with Hopeless and Fearless Records, and Pure Noise Records inspire us. New Found Glory is an inspiration, Blink-182 (of course), Alkaline Trio, and Sum 41 for the early 2000’s material. State Champs, Neck Deep, The Story So Far, A Day To Remember, etc. would sum up my influences of todays generation for our band.

Jake: We really try to listen to a variety of music within our genre spectrum to broaden our horizons as much as possible.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Scott: Oh geez. Thats a tough one. For me, I guess I always wanted to be on stage in front of a crowd. Watching live music on television and seeing the crowd reaction made me want to do that for a living. There have been shows/concerts that really inspire me to get myself together and keep pushing forward. Third Eye Blind back in 2009 inspired me and so did Warped Tour. Those two things kept me pushing forward.

Jake: As a band I think Green Day had a pretty big impact for us starting a band. We began by covering a bunch of their songs as some of them are pretty easy to play yet progressive and something you can rock out to as a young teen. As well as going to any local shows we could find.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Scott: Me personally, I eat a hamburger with onions on it and drink a soda before each show. The burger keeps me full throughout the performance, the onions open up my sinuses, and the soda creates a syrup coating in my throat to help me through vocals.

Jake: As a drummer I like to listen to any previous bands while doing exercises on my drum pad to get me loose and pumped up. And of course drinking all the red bull i can get my hands on.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Scott: Biggest highlight of the bands career so far has been performing at the Whisky A Go Go in 2013 as well as performing with Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth that same year. We also performed under the same lineup as Foo Fighters, Zac Brown Band, Joan Jett, and more.

Jake: Playing at the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, CA was definitely the highlight of the band so far. Traveling all the way across the country and playing at such a historic and memorable place is something I will never forget.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Scott: If I could tour with any bands, I’d say mine would be Abandoned By Bears, Third Eye Blind, Blink-182, and Circa Survive.

Jake: For me, it would have to be Led Zeppelin during their prime. Not only for their amazing music, but also because that was a time when real bands could pack stadiums and people would actually buy your music.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Scott: I would like people just to take a listen to at least one track from this EP and find a favorite.
