For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Trusted? How long has the band been around?
The Trusted formed around mid-2016, so we’ve been together for about three years. Dale and I however had been writing and working together since 2014. I was in a garage rock band called’ Juke’ We lost our guitarist and Dale joined around Christmas 2014 (He as part of a band called Humbug prior to this). We starting writing and it just felt special. When Juke kind of died out, we decided to form our own band. That new band would become ‘The Trusted’
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Well trying to find a band name that hasn’t been taken is pretty hard. The Trusted comes from a Nick Lowe song called ‘Peace, Love And Understanding.’ When we had a look around, we quickly discovered that the name wasn’t taken so we ran with it. It’s cool because it doesn’t really mean anything
When we were just starting out, we were called ‘Indigo.’ When Dave joined in mid-2016, it kind of felt new again so we became The Trusted.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
We write all the songs as a band. We try and run things as a democracy (not always easy,. Being in a band is like being in a relationship with three other people). Most of our songs have come from just jamming together in the same room. Sometimes someone will bring a riff or chord sequence and sometimes, the songs just fall from out of nowhere.
I write all the lyrics. As the singer, it kind of feels right because I want to believe in what im saying/singing.
Most of our songs focus on the human soul and how we emotional respond to others. We live in a complicated world and I think there is a lot to be said about how we feel about it. At the moment, it feels like society is rapidly changing under the weight of politics and technology. I think because of this, our songs will naturally evolve alongside the current landscape.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Ooh, depends on who you ask in the band. I know Dale is currently being heavily inspired by American Hip-Hop. I know ‘Brockhampton.’ is having a big effect on his creative outlook. Its hard not to avoid ‘The 1975’ at the moment. Some of the stuff they are doing is quite inspiring. They seem to be genre jumping and experimenting with different styles. I’m finding that quite inspiring. I’ve also been listening to The National a lot recently. I know Fin and Dave have been going through a ‘Rage Against The Machine’ phase.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For me bands like The Who, U2, REM and The Rolling Stones kick started my desire to form a band. I have always been inspired by bands who are greater than the sum of their parts.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
A few vocal warms and a lot of pacing. Before I like walk around, keep on my feet. It helps me build up the energy before getting on stage
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
There have been quite a few. Our first big headline show was pretty special.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Any of my influences, just for vanity reasons haha. If I had to picked one ermm, maybe The Beach Boys as they were in ‘The Sixties’ so I can listen to those harmonies and God Only Knows every night for a month or two.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Make sure you vote…(but don’t vote Tory)
