Unsigned Spotlight: The Summer War

The Summer War are a pop punk band from Sheffield.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

David - Guitarist and Vocals
Tom - Bass and Vocals
Jack - Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Summer War? How long has the band been around?

Dave: Tom and I were in a band together when we were about 15 years old called Boy Rescue, which is how we became life partners.

Jack: I was mostly part of pop punk and metal bands, as well as a two piece acoustic drum and guitar band akin to Brighteyes and Two Gallants.

Tom: We've been together for about 3 and a half years. Dave and I put out an advert for a drummer after years of playing in old bands together, and we met Jack!

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Tom: I just got the idea from an old anime film called Summer Wars, and also in The Drama Summer by The Starting Line, where Kenny sings "it ends the summer war". I just thought it was a cool phrase, and it stuck.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Tom: Dave and I write the lyrics and usually have an idea for a riff, which we then bring to Jack and build it around any drum ideas he has depending on the direction of the sing/feel of it.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Dave: Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Typhoon, The Hoteliers.

Tom: The Dangerous Summer, I've also been listening to a lot of acoustic-y/folky stuff recently, bands like Typhoon and Mansions are so creative and interesting to listen to. Really excited for Death Cab's new album as well.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Dave:  Blink 182, Leeds Festival 2010(?) when Tom and I were so wasted we sang every word into each others faces. Amazing show.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Jack: Usually a few stretches here and there as well as rudimentary stick exercises and warm ups.
Tom: Just basic vocal warm ups and a glass of whiskey/the cheapest beer available to keep my throat from drying out. Super professional.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

All: Our sold out show with Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! - a band we've all been into for years.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Jack: Cititzen, Seahaven, And So I Watched You From Afar and Turnover.
Dave: Tour with any band in the states... maybe Warped Tour so you can hang with loads
of bands. I'm greedy!
Tom: All the classics like blink, Brand New etc. But also some more left field bands like Typhoon, maybe The Maine now that they're going in a more alternative direction, Death Cab. Although I'm not sure how well we'd fit with any of those bands!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
