Unsigned Spotlight: The Split Seconds

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Drew Champion plays lead guitar and lead vocals, Alex Massi plays rhythm guitar and backup vocals, Stephen Parsons plays bass, and Sean Peterson plays drums.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to (insert band/artist name here)? How long has the band been around?

Drew and Stephen were both in The Coastals and Boardroom Heroes prior to The Split Seconds.  The Split Seconds has been around since 2015/

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Drew came up with the name because it sounded cool and seemed fitting for a tight and uptempo punk band.  He also thought that the project would be a short-term thing that just played a few shows in DC so it was in line with those expectations.  Fortunately people have really responded to what we're doing and we're in it for the long haul.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Drew writes the songs.  The topics of the songs change depending on whats going on in our lives but the themes of integrity, self-ownership, and trying to navigate a chaotic culture remain consistent.  Most of our songs come out of struggle and this has been a reflection of our lives during this time.  Hopefully as we move forward we'll be able to write songs with edge and passion that don't come out of misery.  It remains to be seen.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Our core influences remain the same and we still listen to them a lot.  Band like The Clash, The Buzzcocks, Generation X, The Jam, The Damned, and Dead Boys.  Beyond them we're always listening to a ton of stuff to draw from.  Lately Ella Fitzgerald, Reverend Horton Heat, Pantera, Beethoven, Refused, David Bowie, and even Waka Flocka Flame have been playing in the tour van.  There are always things to learn from artists of other styles that can inspire our own songs.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

For Drew The Living End was a huge influence in terms of playing classic punk with instrumental chops, stylistic range, and musical knowledge.  We don't count them as a huge influence on our music but they're our biggest influence in terms of what we're trying to do as a band.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

We try to warm up on our instruments a bit before we hit the stage but beyond that we don't have a preparation routine or anything.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Playing The 930 Club was a real dream come true for Drew in particular who grew up in DC seeing shows there.  Warped Tour 2018 will be amazing as well.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

We'd love to hop in a time machine and hop on the 1976 Anarchy Tour with The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, and The Heartbreakers.  For current bands we'd love to tour with The Interrupters and Frank Turner.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Keep an eye out for "Counterfeit Reality" out June 8th, and catch us on Warped Tour this July!
