For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Sacred Crows? How long has the band been around?

We’ve all been in various bands throughout our careers. Enough and pop punk is where it all started. We evolved out of that in time. The Scared Crows is still a fairly new project. We’ve been around for about a year.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name came to me while writing a screenplay centered around a rock band. I just thought it was clever. I looked it up and discovered it was an episode of Betty Boop from 1939. I instantly fell in love.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Up to this point, I’ve written all the material. But, the guys have really helped shape the sound and give it direction. Now that we have a groove going, it’s been fun to get together and collaborate on material from scratch. Thematically, I like songs that provoke thought. A lot of The Scared Crows songs are sarcastic and cynical in nature. We like to poke fun at trendy topics and current events. All positivity.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I don’t really listen to many bands. Lately I’ve been interested in jazz classics. I got this book of standards and it’s been really fun to flip to a random page and explore a new chord progression. I really find inspiration in my peers, too. We played a show with this band recently called Electric Soul Parade. They were phenomenal musicians. We instantly became friends. Interacting and watching them is really inspiring.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

From a songwriting perspective, I have to give credit to Alkaline Trio. I really loved their stuff growing up. I started by playing covers with friends, which gave me platform to try out originals. Also, Cake. When I discovered Cake, my musicianship went the next tier. They taught me a lot and definitely helped mold my taste.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Promote the hell out of it and once it’s show day, just stay relaxed and have fun. Definitely need to spend thirty minutes warming up the fingers and vocal. I don’t get nervous, just excited. It’s pure bliss when we get up there.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Our first show ever instantly comes to mind. We played at The Rainbow Room in Hollywood. It was my first show back after a four year hiatus of performing live. We packed it out and had people dancing all around us til 1am. It was an experience I’ll never forget. After that, I knew this was right.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I want to jump back in time so bad and tour with the legends. Johnny Cash would be a great act to follow on the road. I can imagine the crazy stuff that happened surrounding their tours. I wish I could rewind to 1969 and play at Woodstock, too.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The Scared Crows is a dream come true. With music, I hope to inspire others to follow their passions. The world needs originality so bad. We like to think we are doing our part to help progress the current state of music and that’s what keeps us going. Hopefully that extends to our audience and younger generations of musicians.
