Unsigned Spotlight: The Old Adage

The Old Adage is Detroit’s sibling pop duo! They are chill people who genuinely have a big heart for people and music and hope to touch souls, and make a difference through our sounds. Their passion and everything we do is centered around this idea.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Mimi Chavez - Singer/Songwriter/Manager

Nino Chavez - Music Production/Sound Engineer

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Old Adage? How long has the band been around?

We use to go by Mimi and Nino 2010-2012...and before that Chavez 😂...but we changed our name to The Old Adage in 2012. We “officially” started releasing music with this project in 2014. We’ve never been a part of other bands.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The origin is a Atreyu song. “Becoming the Bull”. Nino brought the name up and I instantly loved it. It took some convincing on his end, but we came to an agreement eventually. It was one of the few band names we could think of that wasn’t already a band at the time.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I feel like for the most part our songs are about motivation and chasing dreams. We both write, but primarily I have the lyrical role. I think the topics change from time to time, but for the most part, I think that is what we want The Old Adage to reflect.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I would say G-eazy, Drake, Bebe Rexha, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift on my behalf...but really anything that has more of a modern sound has been an influence...looking to keep up a bit and stay fresh...personally I don’t think we ever have trouble having an original sound so I like when we try to sound relevant and familiar to the listening ear.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I think we were both heavily influenced by The White Stripes when we originally started...I wouldn’t necessarily say they were the reason for starting, but definitely a big influence!

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We usually have a drink...and I personally drink like 8 waters right before and while on stage...I vocally prepare on the way up and really my favorite way to get comfortable at a show is to meet as many people as possible before I go on.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

I would say opening up for CCR. That is the biggest venue we have played (Soundboard @ Motor City Casino) and in front of 3,000...and with some loving legends...

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

For me I would say twenty one pilots, and paramore, because those are the bands that influenced me the most I think that we could get away w touring w sound wise...n for our sound now I think it would be cool to tour w people like bishop Briggs, Billie Eilish, Phantogram, Robert Delong, Joywave, Imagine Dragons, Tswift, & K flay...

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Don’t give up.
