Unsigned Spotlight: The Nocturnal Broadcast

Touting a unique blend of progressive, math, and roots-based rock, The Nocturnal Broadcast has affectionately been dubbed “math-folk.”

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Connor LaCour - Guitar, Vocals, Songwriter

Drew Brunson - Guitar

Annie Carlson - Bass

Taylor Stoma - Drums, Vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Nocturnal Broadcast? How long has the band been around?

The Nocturnal Broadcast has been together as a 4-piece for 4 years. It was first Connor's solo project, then lived as a 3-piece for a couple months until finally Drew joined us as well.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

At the time, I was writing most of my music in my bed late at night, mostly as a way to keep myself company. I was taking a long drive with my sister through the Appalachian Mountains in 2014 and The Nocturnal Broadcast was just the result of a concerted brainstorming session.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Connor is the sole songwriter, with the caveat that that songwriting is more and more influenced by the musical reactions of the other members of the band. Themes tend to be introspective and contemplative with focuses on topics like existentialism and the Self.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Currently, I think we're really inspired by the music being made by the likes of Big Thief and Pinegrove. Lyrically and musically, I think they both are untouchable in their particular lanes.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I don't know about inspiring us to start a band, but a few early inspirations that made me want to play music in general include Death Cab for Cutie, Sufjan Stevens, and Modest Mouse.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We should probably do more to prepare for shows. I think everyone just has their own personal routines for trying to stay relaxed and focused.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Honestly, being able to pack 2 weeks worth of stuff into a minivan and drive across the country playing shows that we booked is easily the highlight for us.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Hovvdy, Pinegrove, Ratboys, Big Thief. I'm a big fan of all of them and I feel like we could stand to learn a lot from them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for having us!
