Unsigned Spotlight: The Gloom In The Corner

The Gloom In The Corner is concept driven metalcore band from Melbourne, Australia.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Mikey Arthur - vocalist (singing & screaming) / lyricist / primary songwriter

Matt Stevens - guitarist / backing vocalist / manager

Paul Musolino - bass guitarist / backing vocalist

Nic Haberle - drums / percussionist

For starters, were you guys a part of any other bands prior to The Gloom In The Corner? How long has the band been around?

Mikey, Matt and Nic have been in a handful of local bands, but nothing extremely huge. This is actually Paul’s first band! We’ve been around since February 2016, where it started off as a small EDM side project for Mikey

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

“The Gloom In The Corner” stems from 2 things; Mikey wanted to create a new tumblr page because it was locked out of his old one, but that derived from the song “Gloom” by The Devil Wears Prada. We’re yet to change our name.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Mikey writes what we call the “cadaver” of a song; basically a fully fleshed out pre-production version of a song, which is then edited and adjusted by the rest of the members of the band.

All of our songs are part of one large story that connects together to create one arc, recently concluded with ‘Requiem’. We’ve tackled various topics in the past, from the post-traumatic vices that returned veterans face, supernatural elements, depression and suicide, and quite recently in ‘Requiem’, the struggles that artists face on an almost day-to-day basis, and how cries for help through their art are not necessarily heard.

Though topics “come-and-go” depending on the context of the story, we’ll always be adding to the universe that we’ve created in Gloom, and although the arc covered from ‘Fear Me’ to ‘Ultima Pluvia’ is finished, there’s still a much larger universe to explore.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Mikey - bands in the same vein as Ice Nine Kills, King 810, Emmure, but even contemporary pop artists, new and old, and a LOT of film soundtracks and classical music.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Mikey - Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance (and MCR in general), Avenged Sevenfold, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and a lot of pop culture; movies, TV shows, video games, etcetera

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We all have our own individual warm ups; Mikey doing vocal exercises, Matt and Paul doing guitar warm-ups and Nic doing paradiddles.  We also all collectively do a few songs ‘acoustically’ to get in groove and ease any pre-show jitters. Also yes, stretching is key.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Our few headliner shows have been a lot of fun, as well as supporting some of our favourite bands growing up; Chelsea Grin, The Plot In You, Ice Nine Kills just to name a few, but I think our set this year at the Unify Pre-Show was definitely one of our biggest highlights, despite all the technical difficulties we faced (not to anyone’s fault, it could have happened to anybody).

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Mikey - The Dillinger Escape Plan, My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, Graves, Jack the Stripper, Ice Nine Kills and our American homies in Left To Suffer and Weeping Wound

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us and our story over the last 4 years, we couldn’t have done it without you!
