Unsigned Spotlight: The Cutthroat Brothers
They’ve been called “the Sweeney Todds of rock” – and The Cutthroat Brothers make good on that tag. They’re a pair of demon barbers with a razor-sharp riffs and dangerously catchy songs, and their bloodthirsty brand of garage punk has been ripping up the Pacific Northwest for the better part of 2018.
Frontman Jason Cutthroat and drummer Donny Paycheck are renowned for their tonsorial skills. They’re storming out of the barbershop with an eight-song debut and accompanying music video that demonstrate they’re just as handy with ringing choruses as they are with straight-edge razors.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Jason Cutthroat: Vocals and guitar, barbering
Donny Paycheck: Drums, barbering
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Cutthroat Brothers? How long has the band been around?
Donny Paycheck was in hardcore punk band, Zeke. The Cutthroat Brothers started in February of 2018
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
This is our only name. It comes simply from the fact that we are both barbers at our day jobs, a reference to Cutthroat shaving.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
We both write the songs. Generally speaking Jason will write a riff and lyrics while Donny writes drum parts. All of the music is arranged by both. Blood, death, drugs, sex, black magic, bad relationships, not necessarily in that order. It probably won’t change as there aren’t any other topics worth exploring.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
The Gun Club, The Cramps, Iggy and The Stooges, Eagles of Death Metal, The Misfits
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Nope
What do you do to prepare for a show?
Find a victim, use a straight razor to do bloodletting on them to get out the demons. Give them a great haircut. Take the bloody hair clippings to make voodoo dolls later. Cast spell over venue. Eat a healthy snack and 6 shots of tequila. Play show.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Having Mike Watt (Bass player for Minutemen, The Stooges) offer to play bass on our next record
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
N/A.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Nope.
