Unsigned Spotlight: Sound&Shape

At a time when sub genres threaten to overwhelm, Sound&Shape make pure, unfettered Rock And Roll. Exploring every corner of stylistic possibility within that context, S&S’s songs range from the heavy and fierce to the soothing and gentle.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Ryan Caudle - Guitar, vocals

Ben Proctor - Drums, vocals

Pat Lowry - Bass, vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Sound&Shape. How long has the band been around?

Ben still plays in a band called Screaming Names, and I (Ryan) played in a band called Oliver’s Army before Sound&Shape. Sound&Shape has been around for a long time but this line up has been together for a little under 3 years.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

It was the least objectionable name in a list of the worst band names ever. And nope; we’ve always been Sound&Shape.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I (Ryan) write the songs and then we arrange them as a group. Thematically I write about many things. This new record however has a lot to do with the time. The passage of it, how we use the time we have etc.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Peter Gabriel was a huge influence on my writing for this record. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Bad Religion, Opeth and I’m loving the new Smashing Pumpkins stuff.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

My dad was a musician and it’s just in my blood.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Usually some wrist exercises and definitely vocal warm ups.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Getting to tour with Sparta and then King’s X. Both those bands are so good, and are such sweet people. We learned a ton from both of them.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I think touring with someone like Queens Of The Stone Age would be pretty rad. I think we’re similar enough to make sense but different enough to not make it boring.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just that we hope everyone is safe and healthy and doing ok and to please get out and vote!
