Unsigned Spotlight: Sink The Ship

Sink The Ship came out swinging when they arrived on the scene. Being heavily influenced by both post hardcore bands and today's metal artist they were able to harness a sound that had one foot in the past and the other in the future, making it a relatable sound for today's metal fans.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Colton Ulery- Vocals
Brandon Knerem- Guitar
Jordan Haight- Guitar
Zakk Godare- Bass
Aaron Skinner- Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Sink The Ship? How long has the band been around?

I fronted a band called Validay Parking from 2008-2011. The bass player for sink the ship also played bass in VP. Everybody else were in other bands, but I can't remember off hand who they were with. Sink the Ship has been going strong since 2012.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

I wish I could conjure up a deep insightful meaning behind our name. But I can't haha. The name simply sounded cool.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Brandon and myself pitch ideas back and forth and work together on the instrumental end of things. I write all the lyrics. The songs topics already have kind of evolved since releasing our EP. Our EP mainly dealt with my issues and struggles with myself and my family. Our upcoming album is basically about our endeavors as a touring band.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I personally don't even really listen to a lot of different bands. I try to make the inspiration for my music as organic as possible. I like feeling like the things I create came from nothing but my own thoughts and experiences.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Not really. I've always just been into performing. Whether it be acting, singing, playing an instrument, ect.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I have various vocal exercises that I'll do in the green room of the venue or in the van a couple of hours before the show.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

We've played with a lot of nationally recognized bands. (Blessthefall, Attila and Askylit Drive to name a few). Our EP features Fronz from Attila on one of the tracks. That's pretty cool.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I'd tour with any band close to our genre, who weren't scum bags haha. Like I said earlier, I don't listen to a lot of bands. I'd seize any opportunity that would benefit us and I'm always down to make friends with other bands.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Be on the lookout for our new album this summer! It's gonna be a banger.
