For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Sink or Swim? How long has the band been around?
Max, Ryan and I haven’t really been in serious bands before, while Gino used to play guitar in Searching For Diamonds (Metalcore) and Kevin also played the guitar in Defender (Melodic Hardcore).
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name originally comes from a song by Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! It’s really easy to remember and has a nice acronym as well, which works out really well for us. In addition to that it also reflects our mind set in a way. If you don’t swim, you’ll sink. The swimming is the hustle to grow and get better, and we really take that to our hearts.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
In the past almost everyone was doing some work on the songs and the writing but we changed that up a little. Right now, Gino writes pretty much all of the instrumental parts while I’m responsible for the lyrics and the melodies.
The main theme resolves around positivity and growth most of the time. What I’ve learned in the past couple months is that your mindset really makes all of the difference. This is what I try to bring into the texts and melodies. Of course there’s a lot of room to play with then to actually compose the text for a whole song. I’m sure as we grow older and learn, our themes and music in general also will.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Chunk!, No Captain Chunk!, Issues, State Champs, Northlane, Abandoned By Bears, City Lights and Intervals to name a few!
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
There have been plenty actually but to write this kind of music I’d definitely say it was C!NCC! for almost all of us. But that’s kinda obvious as soon as you know the story behind our band name.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We move a lot. And I mean A LOT. So mostly besides the obvious warm up of each one at their instrument and the vocal chords. We mostly do some jumps and flex a little pre-show. Also helps to get your heart rate up a little and hype yourself even more!
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We recently played a show with Waterparks. I’d say this one really did it for us. Venue was packed and the crowd was super into it, moving like crazy!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
To name a genre cousin we’ll say A Day To Remember. There are lots of bands we’d love to tour with obviously and touring in general is fun anyway but ADTR would definitely be sick.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Nothing really, besides: Stay positive, don’t let anyone define who you are and where you’ll go. Go your own way, do your own thing. If you want something, go get it. Despite what people say!
