Unsigned Spotlight: Silver And Smoke
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Silver And Smoke? How long has the band been around?
Our list of notable bands we have been in is:
DB And The Catastrophe,
Unassociated,
Blindfold The Devil,
Good News, Apollo
Locally Grown.
S&S has been around for about two years.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We booked the bands first show about a month after the first rehearsal. Basically, we needed a name so we voted on one from a list of possibilities, and we've been gigging/recording ever since... haven't had time to change it.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Lyrics are usually written by either Tyler, Dino, or a combination of the two. The compositions are more of a group effort, each band member basically writes their own part.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shakes, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Each band member has a laundry list of different influences. Listing them would be 80% of this interview. Suffice to say that each member has his own unique set of influence.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We like to have a few beers and relax. Our best shows are always the ones we have fun at, so getting in the headspace to enjoy performing is a big part of it. We also inevitably end up scribbling down a set list with 10 minutes left before we take the stage.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Touring the West Coast, and filming a music video or at one of our shows
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Eagles when Joe Walsh partied/destroyed with John Belushi. Any of The Who tours (just read the biography of Keith Moon).
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We're four individuals with four independent minds. But somehow, some way, when we come together, an understanding occurs. And we make music. After all, that's what we're in; the music-making business. There's a simple beauty in that notion.
