Unsigned Spotlight: Screams on Sunday
Madrid rockers Screams on Sunday have gone about crafting an emotive and gripping brand of melodic rock, honing influence from across the alternative music spectrum; beefy breakdowns and resonating guitar-work coalescing with an enticing lead vocal and pinpoint melodic injections.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Patty does the vocals, Dani plays the guitar, in the bass we have Alber and drumming is Pepe's role.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Screams on Sunday? How long has the band been around?
Patty: I was in a band with Alber called Under False Pretences, in which we played for two years (if I remember correctly). Then, the other two members wanted to do other stuff so we split up, and that was when we formed Screams On Sunday. SOS has been around for six years already (that's a long time woaaah, but I want it to be more)
Pepe: I played with a band called Blue Pants, but we split up.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Patty: We gotta thank my two younger sisters for the band's name ahahaha. The name comes from a Sunday morning in which both of them were yelling at each other, so I proposed the name Screams On Sunday, but I didn't think it'd go that far as to be the definitive name hahaha And nope, we've had this name all along. Before that we were a nameless band hahahaha
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Patty: We all write the songs, though I always do the lyrics and melodies of the vocals. Generally one of us comes with an idea to the rehearsal room and we start working on that: sometimes it's more or less finished ideas, sometimes it's just a draft of the songs, sometimes it's just even a short sequence of notes. Sometimes it just happens while jamming, but we all contribute to every single song we make. That's what gives the music its special sound. When it comes to the lyrics, I like writing about stuff that I worry about, and I try to fit one of those topics into the song I believe has the music that best fits it. For example, our latest single Lopsided Heart is a song about toxic relationships and violence, but Tired and Sick, on the other hand, is a song about how people (including ourselves) a lot of times dedicate themselves so much to a job to make a decent living that sometimes we even forget there is a life beyond our job. Each song has its topic, and I believe they're topics that trouble some other people as well.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Patty: I'm truly inspired by everything I listen to, but right now I'd say I really look up to Don Broco. Their music is awesome, I could listen on repeat for weeks (which I've already done, that's why I can confirm it hahahaha) and their shows are so energetic, I love their vibe.
Pepe: I listen to a lot of bands that sound very different from what you usually hear. But I could say Falling In Reverse or Don Broco.
Dani: I've always listened to a lot of genres like jazz, blues, punk and metal. If I had to choose a couple of bands I'd say Blink-182 and Biffy Clyro.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Patty: Hmmm, I don't think there was just ONE band that inspired me to get into music, but a bunch of them. Bands like Linkin Park, Green Day, All Time Low, U2...
Alber: I was actually inspired by friends who played for fun and I thought it'd be a nice experience to live.
Pepe: I was inspired by my brother and all those pop-punk bands of my teen days.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
Patty: I always try to do a 20-minute vocal warm-up before the show, though sometimes it's impossible. I also try not to eat one to two hours before the show starts, I keep myself hydrated and I do try to stretch out my neck and my whole body as much as I can before stepping on the stage, or else I'll be fucked up after the show, 'cos I move so much.
Alber: I cry because it's amazing how long we take to do the soundcheck hahahah. I also take time to stretch and prepare everything beforehand so that the show goes well.
Pepe: Stretch, warm up a lot, check that everything is OK and depending on the time I might eat something.
Dani: I warm up my fingers and prepare mentally before playing.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Patty: I think that our latest single Lopsided Heart is a bit of a highlight itself. We worked with one of the biggest Spanish producers, Dani Alcover, in that song, and I think it's one of the best songs we've ever recorded. I'm really happy with how it turned out! Also, we worked really hard on its video with Jorge Guasch at Remnant Light Studios, and the combo of song and video is something I'm really proud of. BTW, that song is the reason why we're answering these questions today hahahah
Pepe: all the shows we've played so far, all the released songs, videos, because they require a lot of time and loads of hard work.
Dani: We've played on top of a bus hahaha Just a joke, but it really happened. We organized our own tour all around Spain and that was an awesome experience.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Patty: I'd definitely love to tour with bands like A Day To Remember, The Hives, My Chemical Romance, All Time Low, Don Broco, You Me At Six... All those bands whose music filled my heart and that still do.
Alber: A Day To Remember, Muse, Twenty One Pilots.
Pepe: I have no preference, but I'd love to play with any band that we like and that helped us grow.
Dani: Wish we could perform with Lower Than Atlantis.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Patty: Go check out our new single Lopsided Heart and follow us on social media <3 Also, Thanks a Bunch for speaking with us.
