For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Safewords? How long has the band been around? 

Individually we have been a part of numerous projects in the Metro-Detroit area over the past 10 years, some more involved than others. Joe was the drummer for Die Strong back in 2010 when Ryan and Joe met. In 2011 they formed Dweller and began writing, recording an EP and a full length supporting regional and national tours  2011-2015. Dweller disbanded in 2015.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

We have never changed the band name and like any band name, there was a subtle process that took place before landing on Safewords. The idea behind the name essentially references the power of words. The same words that can cause one to feel comfort, security, stability and happiness can just as well illicit anger, uncertainty, pain and sadness to others. Sometimes you are not safe to say what you want to say. I've heard actions speak louder but your words can be used against you forever. 

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Ryan writes a decent amount of the initial demoing process on most songs. Each member is more or less inherently responsible for their part of the songs and performance. With that being each member plays multiple instruments so inspiration has come from almost every combination of members/instrument depending on the song etc. Lyrics are primarily written by Ryan and Lucas

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Like any other group of people, we have very different tastes which help round out our process. 

Dillinger Escape Plan, Gaza, Cult Leader, The Chariot, Every Time I Die, Botch, Norma Jean, Poison The Well to name a few.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band? 

Not so much a specific band or artist but more or less the idea of music being able to captivate and genuinely inspire people, especially in darker times. 

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Not very extensive just minor vocal/guitar warm-ups and stretches to loosen up. The biggest factor for us is to keep the feeling fresh and to connect every time we play so mentally preparing to do what we love doing is definitely key. 

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

The decision to handle our entire recording process DIY from Demo to Master. Our debut was initially a five-song EP recorded at a studio. Through the complications and alterations, we decided to take on that part of the process as well and we are set to release a 16 song debut LP this winter, which is the most satisfying feeling to date for us personally.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Despite sounding cliche, we would tour with any band that has integrity in their message, genuinely respects music and gives a passionate performance in pursuit of genuine art.
