Unsigned Spotlight: Rozu
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Tim Graham vocals. DJ Sundine guitar. Henry Navarre bass. Brian Robertson drums
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Rozu?
Tim and DJ were in a band called Owleye. Henry is still in a band called Sorry, Sweetheart and Brian is in a band called Saints of Never After.
How long has the band been around?
We all came together to form this band back in January of 2018 but just announced the band in May and released our debut song in June.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name Rozu was one of 50 DJ and myself (Tim) came up with and narrowed it down to being Rozu. Rozu is Japanese for rose and we wanted this band to fully bloom and do what our past endeavors just never achieved.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
DJ and myself have currently been the primary writers up until this point. We actually are about to get in the studio and start bringing everyone’s flavors into the mix so it should be fun! Up until this point lyrically I have written about my past endeavors and hardships, trying to always having a positive outlook on a shit situation(s) I’ve been through. I’m in the absolute best mindset I’ve ever been in so I think my themes might slightly change going forth.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Oh man, the list can go on forever. Primary bands that are inspiring the current songs we’ve written are Like Moths to Flames, Underoath, Currents, and Dayseeker.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I think we all just kinda knew what we wanted to do to be honest. For me personally the first time I saw Underoath live I was like Yup I’m going to be like that fucking guy. Spencer has really been an influence to me vocally throughout my career.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We all stretch out and just have good vibes all around so we don’t go on stage with poor energy, that is really key. I always like to do a 15 minute vocal warmup singing through a song or two of Mayday Parade with a cup of throat coat and two Halls.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
I think being able to tour the country twice and getting to do a Canada run. Just being on the road is all we want to do with this band so hopefully we get some new highlights here soon.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I think it would be killer to tour with Underoath, Every Time I die, Oceans Ate Alaska, Noble and Us. Underoath and ETID are just incredible bands that paved the way for us then we have some good friends in Noble and Oceans so it would just be a huge party!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
First and foremost thanks for having us and to all of our fans we love you and can’t express how much your support means at such an early stage in this project. Y’all the best!
