Unsigned Spotlight: RoxyLeeHeart
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
I'm a solo artist, so it's just me. But I work with a couple producers, a music director and hired gun musicians for live shows
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to forming RoxyLeeHeart? How long has the band been around?
I joined my first band in college. We were sort of melodic hard rock, from there I sang for Rockabilly, metal, and other hard rock bands. After a while I started feeling a draw towards pop music. I've always loved radio music for some reason, and that is truly what I wanted to make, so I switched gears. I joined a hip hop group sort of like Black Eyed Peas and started pursuing my own solo music as a pop artist.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The first incarnation of this was Roxy Heart. My birth name is Roxanne, I felt like I was given a stage name so I needed to use it. Around 2010 when I was developing my image I thought Roxy Heart was a cool name, but it definitely turned out to be too common, and I was on the look out for something new. In January of 2011 I got engaged to my husband, whose middle name is Lee. I had already been building the Roxy Heart image so I decided to keep it and add Lee. At this point I consider RoxyLeeHeart to be the name of my music project, and I am Roxy Lee.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I write all of my lyrics and vocal lines. I have been working with producers to create the music and have been lucky enough to find some great, creative people. I have picked up the guitar in the last 2 years so I am slowly learning how to write music on guitar and hope to write, record, and produce my own album of music after releasing my current EP. My songs all have a darker tone to them, I've never been one into super happy sounding music. I find myself telling stories with my lyrics. Things I've overheard, situations people I know have been in, and of course instances I've experienced myself. I'm interested to see where that direction goes over time, when I was younger and single, my songs were about unrequited love, and drama and things like that. Now that I'm older, happily married and somewhat settled in life, I find myself as sort of a narrator more than anything. Offering commentary, advice, and insight through my music
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
I'm always inspired by vintage music. I love the sounds of the 60s, and the 70s too, although I'm kind of obsessed with the 60's. I love Do Wop, 60's girl groups and surf rock. I'm also always inspired by my favorite band in the whole world, Coheed and Cambria. They are so incredibly talented, I really strive to just be a fraction of how prolific they are. I also draw inspiration from female artists. Right now I love Cruel Youth, Bishop Briggs, K. Flay, Lana Del Rey, Amy Winehouse always. I love strong women
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
My dad is a musician so I grew up watching him pursue that dream, and that's what really pushed me to do what I do. But Coheed definitely inspired me to go forth and rock the hell out!
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
On the day of my show I sing all day to make sure my voice is super warmed up and flexible. I also have to do a lot of mental preparation. Visualization of a successful gig and positive self talk to manifest a great performance. I get major anxiety before a show so I basically have to talk myself down from the ledge for the entire second half of my day until I start playing. I'm not sure why, but it has gotten worse over the years... and it's not nerves, I really just hold myself to ridiculously high standards and don't want to allow for any fuck ups.... I wouldn't advise that sort of attitude towards oneself, haha. I also do breathing exercises to open up my lungs and help with breath control
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Really just putting together this whole EP. Writing the music, filming and editing the music videos, moving myself to LA to create it. So far this is my biggest accomplishment as an artist.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
My answer for this will probably always be Coheed and Cambria. I just have so much respect for them and love what they do, it would be great to just bask in that greatness and hopefully a little might rub off!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I'd just like to say thank you for the opportunity, and I hope you love the record when it comes out!
