For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Right on, Kid? How long has the band been around?
Right On, Kid! actually used to be an acoustic project with Nick and Zach and a guy named Garrett. Before that, RJ was in a post hardcore band with high school friends, Tieler was in another pop-punk band. Eli and RJ were both in another pop-punk/hardcore project called “On Your Doorstep” for a time, but later disbanded and focused on Right On, Kid! In July it will be a year as a complete project.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
When it was an acoustic gig, we were called Street Lights, and when we first started working on becoming a full project, we searched for a new name. A friend of ours actually gave a name idea he had to us, and that was Right On, Kid!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
We’re all pretty involved in the musical elements as well as the lyrical ones, but Zach and Nick have been the main lyricists in our band. Most of the songs are about girls or being young, pretty generic boy band stuff. Our new songs we’re working on are still about girls, but more angry. As we experience more and get over our exes, our writing will probably not be so sad.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Most of the bands we all listen to mutually are Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, The Story So Far, Neck Deep, The Wonder Years, Title Fight, and basically anything else within that spectrum of pop-punk.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For our band, as a whole, Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy are main influences for all of us, but we all have different roots in music. Nick has been playing acoustically for a number of years, RJ, Zach, and Eli have all been involved in bands over the hardcore spectrum, and Tieler’s always been a punk.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
We show up, laugh, and just concern ourselves with having a good time and meet and talk to people who come to the show. It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for us to stretch, one of us is bound to pull something soon. Zach says he stretches so he doesn’t dislocate his knee again.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We’d say the biggest highlight would be opening for Hawthorne Heights, Mest, Handguns, and London Falling for the Three-Headed Monstour. It was cool to meet some of the people we’ve looked up to as musicians and to share a stage with such good artists.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Blink-182 from 10 years ago and Rage Against the Machine are bands from the past we’d like to play with. As a present artist, we’d have to go with Carly Rae Jepsen if we got the chance, but on a serious note it’d be cool to play with The Wonder Years.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We’re just stoked to tour this summer, get to our album this winter, and hopefully just get as many people to listen to our music.
