Unsigned Spotlight: RedCult
With a name based on a shadow religion in video game lore, REDCult takes the deep symbolism and mysticism surrounding the blood god-worshiping sect and applies it to life in modern day.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to RedCult?
The Body Rampant/New Dilemma)
How long has the band been around?
This project is all new. This is something we wanted to do for a while but wanted the right platform and sound to move forward with. This song was the perfect vessel for the project.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The origin of the name has to do with Minecraft stoneworks lore. The Red Cult is a Sun God worshiping sect in the sands of the desert. They believe that the weak will die and the strong will prevail. This is something we have been seen throughout time and it is relevant to this decade and beyond.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Zack wrote the music for this one and I wanted to just add a vocal blanket to the amazing structure he had built. The song is about severing the pre conceived notions and expectations of others to truly live a life that is fruitful and your own. This is a prevailing theme in the song and will continue as a running theme, Not the only theme but it is prevalent throughout the works.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Greg: Watching Letlive in the sweltering heat and Jason running on top of lined port o johns was the epitome of inspiration. A pissed off kind hearted man running over shitters was a great metaphor for life. I mean come on, life can get shitty. I choose to run over top of it then to sit in it. Think Mario Bros. I am trying to run on the top of the bricks and choose my level. Not hop through your fucking traps.
Zack: The Black Dahlia Murder on their most recent tour! It was incredible seeing one of my favorite metal bands reform after the tragic death of their frontman. It was a beautiful thing to see the band push on and continue to play such awesome music in honor of Trevor. I have always been inspired by the awesome musicianship of the band, particularly the guitar playing of Brandon Ellis, and seeing the band in all of their glory inspired me to revisit my extreme metal roots with Red Cult.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Nothing too crazy... a nice shot of Jack to loosen up and some basic warm up exercises on the guitar
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We are a relatively new project. However, the fact that so many people are digging our latest signle is a great first highlight. Nowadays, thanks to the internet, there are so many things that people can do to occupy their time with and the fact that people will take some of that time to listen to our music is an increbile feeling!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
The Black Dahlia Murder - Because they are one of our biggest influences
Orbit Culture - Another big influence. I had the pleasure of meeting these guys on their tour with Veil of Maya and Avatar and they were incredible people and seemed like that would be a great band to tour with. Nothing like some good old Swedish metal!
Lamb of God - Do we really need an explanation for this one??? They bring such incredible energy to every show and sharing the stage with such an icon would be an honor.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you enjoy Severed, stay tuned! We have some more killer music in the works and we will be releasing it soon.
