For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Rebuild & Rebound? How long has the band been around?
Typical Stereotype & A Profitable Failure
Rebuild & Rebound has been around since the beginning of 2013, when A Profitable Failure changed its name and we brought on Christian, after playing with him at a local house show.
We've all been best friends ever since.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name actually came from the former guitar player of A Profitable Failure, when Jake, Quade, and Mike were members. He suggested the name, and we liked it so it just stuck. It was a bit later that we found out that it was actually from The Story So Far's song "Quicksand". Nothing against TSSF, but the connotation followed us with people thinking we were like a tribute band (which we were nothing of the sort). Through it all though it really fit our attitude of always staying positive and not letting anything keep us from doing what we want to do; its taken a special place in our hearts, and has even affected how we live our daily lives.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your
songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Jake is a main composer of most of our music, but what we really strive for is to write everything as a collective. So we will all be in Jake & Quades apartment, and he will show us a guitar or piano riff and we'll build from there, throwing ideas around about a chorus or a way
to drop it out for a bridge or how many layers of orchestra to add. We treat our song writing like hanging out, if we all sit down and enjoy the process, the songs will come out feeling complete and fulfilling to all of us, and no matter what, that is what matters.
As for the topics, the songs range, though a main source of them is our relationships with people in our lives. Breaking up with a significant other, the loss of a friend, or a bad relationship with family can all affect how you act, feel, and even your view on the world. Our songs take on the role of almost a universal auto-biography.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Can we just give you control over all of our Spotify playlists? (joking of course) But honestly we could do a separate JRR Tolkien Trilogy on just this subject alone. We listen to so many different genres and bands from almost every decade, ranging from Opera, to Punk, to Folk to Pop; taking a little bit out of each one to come to the point where we are at now. Though if we had to pick a couple that really had the biggest influence so far it would be All Time Low, Panic! At the Disco, The Cab, Mayday Parade, Fall Out Boy, The Maine, & Switchfoot
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a
band?
There were once again many groups and acts that inspired each of us individually to start a band, though the group that to this day is a constant source of inspiration and motivation has to be the band All Time Low. Since day one, they have just oozed positivity, fun, and a
pure enjoyment of life. Everything they have done up to this point in their careers is literally what we aspire to be; which is getting to spread our art and our passion for music to millions of people all while still being the same best friends from high school, still having just as
much fun a whole decade later.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc…
Jake (and sometimes Christian) will find a quiet space to do vocal warm-ups an hour before our set, but most of our prep is an on/off stage huddle where we pump each other up. That being said it usually involves a current joke or we poke fun at each other, but if you're looking for a band that does full yoga and jumping jacks before a set, we are not your candidates.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We've had our fair share of week long or ten day runs, along with some local festivals, but honestly our biggest achievement as musicians is networking and making good relationships across the board. Seth Henderson, from Always Be Genius Studios in Crown Point, Indiana, is a perfect example. We have gone to his studio since day one, and being able to grow up with him and seeing his career blossom from where he was on Real Friend's second full-length, to where he is now is amazing.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and
why?
If it wasn't obvious already, the lineup would have to be All Time Low & Panic! At the Disco for sure.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We recently released an EP earlier this year called The Afterparty. The
EP is available online through Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon, and
Google. Be sure to check out our music videos for the three songs on our
YouTube channel as well!
