Unsigned Spotlight: Penny Mob

Glasgow/Lincolnshire three piece, Penny Mob, are a band who feed off the pure visceral energy of the streets they grew up in, and used it to create their own unique brand of Alternative/Indie Rock.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Jamie Quinn (Vocals and guitar)

Andrew Mullan (Drums and vocals)

Jay Luther (Bass and vocals)

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Penny Mob?

We were all in a few teenage bands at school, but nothing you'd find on Spotify or anything.

How long has the band been around?

We formed around 2016.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Our singer songwriter Jamie is from Glasgow, and the original street gangs in Glasgow in the late 19th century were called the Penny Mobs, and a band is kind of like a gang, so it made sense to name the band Penny Mob.

Who writes your songs?

Our inner Jamie Quinn.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The topic differs completely from song to song, Revolution is obviously quite political, but we write all different types of songs, from punk rock political tracks, party anthems, piano love ballads, gentle acoustic numbers, we're truly Alternative genre wise.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Loads. We get inspired by all sorts from all times, we particularly love the Beatles and The Clash.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

We loved Oasis growing up. The Beatles. The Libertines. All sorts.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Tons of booze. Haha. Nah, we try to warm up as much as we can at the soundcheck, but singing with acoustic guitars before you go on is always a good way to get warm.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Played Isle Of Wight Festival, or a BBC Introducing Festival.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Present - Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian. Past - The Beatles, Oasis, The Kinks, The Who.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

WE ARE THE MOB.

It was written as a protest song for our times, in a world that seems to be becoming more and more divided and corrupted every day, by people in power. But it comes from a place of genuine compassion and honesty. If you're gonna write a song called 'Revolution', then you better have something to say, and mean it. So we said it. And we mean it. It's four chords and the truth. And like Orwell said, "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." WE ARE THE MOB.
