Unsigned Spotlight: Outloved
Outloved is a post-rock outfit from Melbourne, Australia.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Jaydon Colvin | Vocals
Conor Kelly | Guitar
Michael Bean(Beany) | Guitar
Luke Bakker | Drums
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Outloved?
Luke + Jaydon were a part of Everchanging. The band was a pub rock cover band in regional Victoria for 3 years and then moved to Melbourne city to pursue creating and playing original music.
Conor was a part of Dude, I Dunno. The band was a punk rock band that played all the house shows, high school events and battle of the bands competitions.
How long has the band been around?
Outloved formed in late 2018 when writing and recording began with Ionei Heckenberg (guitarist/vocalist in Ocean Sleeper). The band went public a year later, now we’re celebrating with the release of our debut single “Dying To Leave”.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We had the music but we didn’t have the name just yet, so we were brainstorming for a few weeks. One day Jaydon was listening to Loveover by a band called Hindsight and something about playing on the word love appealed to us, and Outloved came up and it stuck!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Jaydon co-wrote and produced the music with Ionei Heckenberg. The main themes/topics we covered in “Dying To Leave” specifically are the feelings associated with the loss of significant others, love and mental health. We’re definitely open to new things and writing whatever we feel is necessary to express from our musical platform.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
There are way too many bands to list that we take influence from, too much to choose from and they’re all so incredible! A few that stick out at the moment would be The Plot In You, Citizen, Holding Absence, Beartooth and Being As An Ocean
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Green Day was probably my [Jaydon] biggest influence, I would watch hours of live videos on youtube and just dream of being in that same incredible environment.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
The usual:
- Vocal warm ups
- Play through riffs
- Check over laptop session
- Annoy Luke
- Have a beer or two
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
There have been a couple:
- Our feature on Dreambound’s Youtube Channel, the channel features so many amazing artists including Dreamstate, Yours Truly, Saviour, Isotopes and so many more. It’s an honor to be amongst them.
- We hosted a house party/show to celebrate the release of “Dying To Leave” which a number of our friends joined us for. The night was a blast, although our neighbours weren’t too happy as we receive a very angry (funny) note on the front door the next morning encouraging us to “F**k off out of the neigbourhood”. They didn’t even spell it right. Ha!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
There’s so many, but for now if we got to choose we’d love to tour with Bring Me The Horizon. They put on such an intense show and were great live when they came to Australia. To be a part of one of their tours would just be the dream.
