Unsigned Spotlight: Our Time Is Now
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Stuart Pearce - Hey there! I sing and play rhythm guitar.
Sam Wilson - I drum.
Nick turner - I play bass for Otin.
Ryan - I am the lead guitarist and also do some vocals.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Our Time Is Now? How long has the band been around?
Stu - "Our time is now" has been around for a few years now and me and Ryan were in a band called "Clear addiction" prior to this band. It was a decent way to learn how to deal with things and make mistakes that you can learn from so that you can progress now that we are all older.
Nick - I was in a band called "Silence, the defiler". We were a heavy band and Ryan played drums for us towards the end, which was how i got the link up to join this band, it was good fun but people were going different ways with their lives and it made it unrealistic to carry on.
Sam - I have jammed with a few different bands when i was younger but this was the first band where everything clicked and we could take it to the next level.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Ryan - The name came through playing in different bands for a long time before OTIN was formed and then taking everything we had learned to make this new band the time when everything would come together and work well.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Stu - I tend to come up with the basic riff and structure after the lyrics have been wrote, then once we take it into the practice studio we all work on developing an idea into a final song we can all be proud of. The main topics are never set in stone and are generally based on things that are happening in my life at the time of writing, i doubt this will change.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Sam - Mainly "Citizen" and "The Story So Far", but I take ideas from all the bands I listen to.
Nick - Got to love "You me at six". I listened to them a lot growing up.
Ryan - I practice a fair amount of "Metallica" when i am at home but they do not translate very well for when you are writing our style of music. So i would say "Creeper" are inspiring me to think outside the box more.
Stu - "A day to remember" are a band that have a similar vibe to us where there is many different styles on the go. I don't think we like setting limits on what we can and can't write, we just see what works.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Ryan - The first band i saw live was "Sum 41" and it was an awesome show for a first one. good energy and good interaction with the crowd, these are two things we look to achieve when we play live.
Nick - I saw a few different bands when i was younger but it was just the thrill of a live show that made me want to start a band and be a part of it.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Ryan - Just tend to keep busy or chat to the other bands about random things, warming up my neck is the main thing! Learnt too many times how much that can suck the next day..
Sam - Make sure I don’t over eat/drink, and get as excited as possible.
Stu - I will just make sure i am as prepared as i can be with regards to making sure instruments are ready, Set lists are done and everyone is happy.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Stu - Probably playing O2 Academy in Birmingham on tour. It was an amazing venue, we played really well and met some great new people.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Sam - I think i speak for everyone when i say we would like to tour with neck deep. They are a band we all listen to and love, it would be a dream come true.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Stu - All of our music is available on all streaming services, (Spotify, ITunes etc..) Our latest single is called 'Sinking Ships' and it would be great if you gave it a listen!
Thank you for talking to OTIN!
