Unsigned Spotlight: Oriah

Oriah consists of vocalist/guitarist Viktoriya Kosta, a wild child with a laser beam stare sent to earth to rip, and guitarist/vocalist Tim Webb, together conjuring a heated and saucy torrent of commanding vocals and powerful vintage Stratocaster tones, with a disposition to loudly command the whole of the visual spectrum and airwaves.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Vik Kosta-Vocal Mama

Tim Webb-Guitar Daddi

Both equally produce all elements, instrumentation and write the music for Oriah.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Oriah? How long has the band been around?

Tim was formerly in a project called Lee Swink and also a performing solo artist. Vik was performing as a solo artist and had birthed the name Oriah.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Its just a name that resonated. there's more to it but that's a secret for now.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We both equally write all aspects of the songs and the dynamic also changes from song to song from who writes certain phrases and lyrics to melody lines and composition. It lets each song take on a new life of its own. Not a formula to the songs. Lyrics also vary in how they manifest from conceptual ideas to free form and letting the mood and tone of the music evoke a story or even an image, narrative takes many forms and often strays from the self.

Don't really care if things change over time, they always tend to though don't they? Change is good, change allows you to step outside of what your little dumb ideas of what is real is and possibly experience something you never could have dreamed of.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

We just both love music, everything that is good is inspiring. Honest music that rips and good of all kinds. We have some favorites for tone and delivery and attitude, attitude is the thing, fucking attitude. Iggy, Jack White, The Kills, The Stones, , Joan Jett, The Cramps, Dylan, Queens Of The Stone Age, Chili Peppers, The Blue Stingrays.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Tim: Actually hearing a lot of world music and film score music when young gave me this feeling like music was some sort of portal to something infinite and magical. like it was the gate keeper and the guide to adventure.  but at some point we both were mesmerized by performances that I think everyone can relate to and know the feeling that legends like Bowie, Izaak Brock, Jack White, Alison Mosshart, Mick Jagger, Freddie Murcury, Link Ray, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis, Kurt Cobain, and so many more where its like their fucking soul is on fire and truly free.

I think we have both always had that craving for freedom and expression since we can remember but definitely we were both not allowed that expression when we were growing up. I think turned us both into shitheads and internal and rebellious. A lot of pain really. thats were we bond. we both had rough childhoods.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Try to catch a vibe. stay honest with each other. be nice to each other. a good show follows a good vibe. raise the pulse. shake off the day sometimes. we both work ridiculously hard to be independent so days can just suck ass and it takes work sometimes to just remember we are about to step up and do what we were born for. its just the way it is.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

This interview.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

A few Iconic bands do come to mind but it isn't really us to say things like that. We are trying to move towards more of the unknown and freedom, not boxing ourselves into little ideal situations that our perception and feelings will likely change quickly in the near future. bands that fucking rip. Its always nice to be surrounded by bands with energy and vision and that work hard. that's what we are striving for and its inspiring to be surrounded by that. negativity and complaints are toxic, and there is plenty of that all around. trying to stay away from all negative bs. the future is bright.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

love you. life rips. rock n roll is life. don't be negative.
