For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Orange No.9? How long has the band been around?
Orange No.9 has been around since 2012. The band was formed by Tod and Cheyenne. Ryan came along in 2013 when her former band Strike the Umpire shared the bill with Orange at the Loft in Poughkeepsie, NY.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The first name of Orange No.9 was Obey (inspired by the John Carpenter movie They Live). Tod has remained friends with an old science teacher from High School who gave him a list of band names he had thought up. The name Orange No.9 was inspired by something his son said. At first Tod intended to use the name for a song but eventually decided it would be an even better name for the band.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Tod writes the songs, the topics vary from everything to family to masturbation.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Orange No.9 draws influences from a lot of different areas. Highly influenced by the alternative bands of the 90s (Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana) as well as from older rock bands such as The Doors.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
That question really depends on which band member you ask, Cheyenne was inspired by Foo Fighters, Nirvana and Weezer, Ryan by the Ramones, Rancid, The Misfits and The White Stripes, Tod by Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana and The Misfits.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Ryan drinks redbull. That's about it.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
The band has opened for Michale Graves and CJ Ramone who were acts that inspired the members. They have also played the Chance Theater, one of the Hudson valleys most well known venue.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
In the present, probably The Foo Fighters- the entire band is very inspired by their music and their attitude and shares a love for the analog way of making music.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Orange No.9 released their EP Straight to VHS! in August. It is currently available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon MP3.
