Unsigned Spotlight: Opulent Construct
Opulent Construct is two guys from Texas that started a metal band in a garage in 2014.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Tristen Moore-vocals
Cameron Cantu-instrumentals
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Opulent Construct? How long has the band been around?
Tristen- various bands that fell apart, guitarist of Lubbock local band Shalashaska Has Landed 2011-2013
Cameron - Ive never really been in a real band but I have always wanted to write my own music.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Tristen - Cam came up with Opulent Construct. I liked the name because in a way, it’s just a synonym for life in general. Life is this overly complicated and lavish experience or construction that we all live every day.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Tristen - Cam writes all of the instrumentals. Sometimes if he sends me a chunk of a song he’s working on I’ll throw in suggestions that usually are as vague as “Do some black metal shit, or throw in a choppy breakdown.” There’s kind of an overarching narrative throughout our first EP, which I plan on continuing into our second. It involves two brothers on a planet named Zenith who have lost the matriarch of their family and they take the loss in very different ways emotionally and mentally. It’s a lot more complicated in my head but I don’t know if I’m ready to flesh out the details of the concept quite yet.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Tristen - My biggest influences vocally are Brandon Butler, CJ McMahon, and Cael Foster.
Cameron - Best influences to me are Deftones, The Contortionist, Korn and Rings of Saturn
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Tristen- I don’t know if it was any specific band or artist that influenced me or Cameron. We both have been metalheads and general music fans for a vast majority of our lives and have always been interested in writing and releasing music I think. If I had to give a specific I would say Ozzfest 2003 really pushed me into finding heavier music.
Cam - Deftones have always been my biggest inspiration. Nothing beats their energy live.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
Tristen - Usually we rehearse the set list a couple of times leading into the show. Hang out, drink and smoke a little bit to unwind and just enjoy getting to hang out. Cam is like a little brother to me so getting to hang out with him before the show and on stage is usually enough to get me pumped and ready.
Cam - Practice. A shot of tequila for the nerves. Maybe a joint. Couple finger exercises. Good to go.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Tristen - Highlight for me was getting to open for Rings of Saturn, Angelmaker and Enterprise Earth for sure. It was a really fun show and the crowd gave us good vibes.
Cam- Agreed. Will never forget, also that was our first show.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Tristen- HORSE the band, definitely. They would be absolutely bonkers to be on the road with and I imagine it would be a very surreal and abstract experience to be on tour with them.
Cam - Would love to open for Deftones or the Contortionist. Possibly do a song with Chino. I could die happy after that.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for taking the time to read all of this! If you like what you hear then we are currently working on our next release which is probably going to be quite a bit different than our first EP. So far it’s a bit heavier with a wider variation of influences and styles.
