Kill The Music

Unsigned Spotlight: Nilu

While growing up in Dubai and California, nilu was surrounded by Persian classical music in the home and during frequent trips to Iran. Music and poetry nights at friends' houses were a constant source of fun and inspiration, as nilu was enveloped by words of Hafez and notes of the santour, tombak, setar and violin.

What’s your artist name, and how long have you been singing?

Hi. My artist name is nilu. I've sung privately to myself since I was quite small, and started singing in public a few years ago.

What’s the origin of that name, is it your real name?

Nilu is short for Nilufar which is my first name. In Farsi, Nilufar is the name of the indigo morning glory flower.

Who wrote "A Thousand Tangled Lies"?

Me. Hi!

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The topics and themes I write about do change, but I often write about navigating through my own anxiety, self-reflection, growth.

What acts are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Been loving Radiohead's new album. Super tasteful string sections alongside ethereal piano and guitar, beautiful lyrics as always. They definitely inspire me to up my string writing game and everything writing game.

Was there one particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start making music?

I remember hearing my sister play Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" when I was in 6th or 7th grade and that shifted my musical consciousness. It changed my perspective what you could do with music, how music could make you feel. I had never felt what I felt until I heard that song.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

I do some breathing exercises to stay relaxed and vocal warmups. If I'm really nervous I'll throw in some jumping jacks and a few screams in my car. Other than that I just try to enjoy the moment. I love playing live.

What has been the biggest highlight of your artistic career so far?

Anytime I get a message from someone saying my music helped them through a difficult time, or made them feel at peace though life's hardships, it's my biggest honor. Playing for His Holiness the Dalai Lama was also a huge honor that I will not forget.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

If I had a time machine I'd love to tour with Mozart. He's a musical genius and it'd be epic to witness his writing process first hand. Just as important, he was known to be one of the most free spirited, humorous musicians of his time. I'd imagine being on tour with him would make for a memorable experience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I have a debut full length album coming out in 2017 and more music coming out this year. You can stay updated with the release dates and shows at www.nilumusic.com. Thanks again for having me <3
