Unsigned Spotlight: Moonfall

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Matthew Howl – Vocals and guitar

Mei Moor – Bass

Andrew Chow – Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Moonfall, if any? How long has the band been around?

Andrew: I'm the only one who played in other bands prior to Moonfall. None of them was anything serious, but the styles I used to play ranged from progressive to post-hardcore.

What’s the origin of the name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Mei: We never had a different name. One day we were brainstorming band names but couldn't find one we all agreed on, so I suggested "Moonfall" as I felt like it represented us well. It has something mystical about it.

Matthew: When I was a kid I wrote a story about the moon falling, and when she came up with the name I immediately knew it was the right one. We thought it was very impactful.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Mei: Matt writes most of the lyrics. I do write songs myself from time to time but he is our main songwriter. Nature is usually a big inspiration for us.

Matthew: We write about what we see in the world, stories that we come across and places we find along the way. We write about life, which is a very broad concept, so I don't think it will change too drastically. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the years. Our main themes revolve around bringing people together through sharing perspectives from different edges of this earth.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Andrew: All three of us were always inspired by the GazettE, even before we became a band.

Mei: We're also inspired by anime music, and bands like Muse, Linkin Park, Pvris, Twenty One Pilots and One OK Rock.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Mei: Nothing specific, it's a combination of all the music we heard since childhood that pushed us to create and ultimately starts a band together.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Matthew: Drink a lot of water, and mentally prepare before going on stage.

Andrew: A good night’s sleep is important before every show. We all make sure to come fresh and well rested since we put a lot of energy into our performances.
Mei: I like to go running on a day of a show. And I'll usually eat a piece of chocolate or candy before going on stage. I believe it’s important to be in a good mood and have fun, most chances are that the audience will enjoy the show if they see that you enjoy it too.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Matthew: It's a little difficult to say because this whole band has been a highlight. There isn't one specific moment that serves as a pinnacle for what we're doing. Getting to journey together, write together and play our songs to people who sing them back to us is all in itself the greatest thing.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Matthew: We'd like to tour with One OK Rock. We all love them and their music and have been following them for a long time. I think touring with Twenty One Pilots would make for some interesting experiences, so that would be cool as well.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Andrew: We just released a music video for our new single "Lost", off our upcoming EP "Empty Cage". Go check it out on our YouTube channel!

Matthew: We're also going on tour throughout the east coast in October, so come and say hello.

Mei: We have candy!
