Unsigned Spotlight: Missilefish
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Missilefish is comprised of two members: Justin Fedoruk and Roger Barker. Justin plays drums and hums quietly to the songs, Roger plucks the strings and primarily sings when he's not screaming. At some shows we'll switch responsibilities halfway through the set to keep it interesting, we like challenging ourselves to see what we can do and how we can push each other musically.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Missilefish? How long has the band been around?
Justin - Highly Trusted Men (Drums, 2012-present).
Roger - Buried in the Sky (Guitar + Vocals, 2008-2009), Breaking Towers (Vocals, 2009-2011).
So far Missilefish is fairly young, we actually just had our first birthday. Unfortunately, no one brought any cake.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We honestly just threw out words until something sounded right, whatever sounded best and rolled off the tongue. Missilefish happened to win the most laughs, and the name hasn't changed.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Roger had written quite a few tunes on an acoustic while hitchhiking the U.S. in 2011, quite a few of our songs
are material that he had written on the road converted to an electric sound. A majority of the songs are about
human relationships, travel, and the writing process itself, but we try to avoid writing too much in one topic just to keep
our ideas fresh and thought-provoking.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We pull from a multitude of influences such as Animals As Leaders, Radiohead, Cattle Drums, Modest Mouse, Circa Survive, Soundgarden, A Lot Like Birds, inbirdseye, various pop artists, and rubber bands of course.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For Justin, listening to Switchfoot in middle school sparked his interest in making music of his own. For Roger, it was
actually the Newsboys that inspired him to play music after seeing them live when he was a kid. We both had religious musical upbringings, that in one way or another led us to this!
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
The only pre-show ritual we had going from the beginning was drawing on our faces with Sharpie, that stuck with us
after the first show and it's been a running tradition since. It's funny, sometimes people don't even recognize us without
the Sharpie marks on our faces, but it really does help with overcoming the anxiety. Create a persona and run with it
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Earlier this year, we were asked to play a big park show with this group of bands in Jasper, GA. Little did we know they
have a really cool scene going on up there in the north Georgia mountains, everyone very passionate about music and the
bands in their area. This was a major highlight because it was like we finally found our family, a network that all helps
and supports each other and we're absolutely ecstatic to be a part of the movement!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Oh goodness, that's a tough one, too many to list! But we'd have to say Mars Volta for sure, A Lot Like Birds would be
hella fun as well. We met them a couple years back at the Masquerade in Atlanta, really good group of guys. And of course,
Cattle Drums. Those guys wrote some really tight tunes, music that was very influential in Missilefish's growth (still dying
to hear that last album!)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We've never been very good at mathematics, but we have the first track, Roadkill, from our upcoming EP available for free
download at missilefish.bandcamp.com. Thanks!
