How long has the band been around?
The Band was formed in 2010 in Orlando, Florida.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The origin of the band name came from our singer. Her name is Meka and the band in its infancy was called, Meka Nism and Her Rusty Tears. Shortly after Bobby joined, the name was shortened to maximize the effect and portray the band as a big unit made up of smaller pieces that create a metal machine when all together.
Who writes your songs?
Early on, the first EP, The dance at the end of the world, was compiled of some material Meka had written on her own. Most of the vocal and guitar parts were already done. However, now a days, Meka is mostly responsible for writing all of the lyrics and the guitar parts are done by Bobby and the other members. We like to collaboratively write things today and share ideas or critiques. The great thing about the band is that everyone is open to ideas, so we have a great time in the writing process.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Our singer, Meka, practices shamanism and spiritual uplifting. The concept of a lot of our songs is that the world can be a dark, dreary place, but if you stay positive and always look for the light, then better things are to come. We want people to realize that they are their own revolution. You can do all that you want if you put your mind to it.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We have a lot of musical influences, and sometimes not all of them are bands. However, after our most recent tour with Avatar, back in May of 2016, we see them as being one of our biggest influences. The amount of hard work they all put in and the constant stage show they put on is just mind blowing. We really want to try and take what we learned from that tour and make Meka Nism the biggest it can be.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I know from a personal standpoint, Metallica was the biggest influence on wanting to be in a band and play guitar. Everything that they do is just above and beyond. There is a reason they are the biggest band today and still selling a lot of records.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, eat …
For every show, we set up everything and get it ready for the show, once thats done, then I like to try and relax as much as possible. Usually, we are driving a lot and long hours on the road can wear you down, so trying to restore energy is crucial. Often, I like to try and explore the city is possible or find something to eat that I have never had. At about 1-2 hours before we play, I always sit with my guitar and warm up. Ill run through some easy warm up routines, then I usually stretch and get the blood flowing.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
The biggest highlight Id say, has been hitting the road and playing some really amazing shows. Especially at the Machine Shop in Flint, Michigan. Our tours with Avatar, Otep, Trapt, and everything have been an amazing time. We really want to get to Europe and claim our place over there. We feel as though we would fit right in :)
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Oh man, that is a hard question. Id have to say maybe Metallica or Iron Maiden. What they do is on such a big level and we would love to be a part of that.
