For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Lane Change? How long has the band been around?
We all bounced around a lot before Lane Change. Myles hosted karaoke, Lizzie and Jake did a lot of fill in work and studio, and Cam was still in high school playing with his peers in what slowly evolved into Lane Change.
We've been Lane Change now for three years, and over 200 shows.
What's the origin of that name and have you changed the bands name before?
The name LANE CHANGE was originally intended to describe the band in its early state as a cover band. We would play songs that no one would expect. We took a great deal of pride in people having a “WTF” or “I can’t believe they just played that” reaction. As we have transitioned to an original act, the name still holds relevance to what we are all about. With the dual, male and female vocal diversity, it really allows us to be unlimited where we go with our songs. There are songs that are predominately Myles or Lizzie, and then there are songs that are an equal duet type of vibe. Some of our songs have a throwback, classic rock simple formula, and some of them are very complex with multi layers and parts. We get a kick out of keeping listeners on their toes and preparing them for the next unexpected "change in the lane."
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Writing is a collaborative process. That's the fun part of being in a band. We all have our strong points. Lizzie with melodies and harmonies, Jake does a lot of riffs, Myles usually has a strong starting idea or title, Cam is big on structure, but everything goes back and fourth, it all overlaps.
We write about what's going on in our lives, or what we see going on with those close to us. We're not a political band on purpose, but you could say a lot of our songs are about political philosophy, or not taking life for granted.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that youre making?
We all have crazy different influences. Right now we all have been digging Bad Co., Heart, Led Zeppelin. Lizzie loves current indie stuff, Myles is a huge R&B fan. Classic rock is where we all connect though.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
When we were first getting together we all went as a group to see the Rival Sons. It was an amazing show, and really inspired us. It made us feel connected to rock music. We heard new stuff that was raw and gritty and moving and we couldn't wait to getwriting.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect
Myles stretches (if you see a show you'll get why). Lizzie does vocal warm ups and Cam and Jake usually do a little warming up just so they're not cold for the show. Everything really starts with that first song, the first chord. Once we start playing it's on!
What has been the biggest highlight of the bands career so far?
Recording the EP we released in February - RISE. Working with Michael Beck at Sound Vision Recording, there were so many moments when we were all looking at each other around the studio thinking, saying, feeling, "this is it, this is what we were going for!" It's rewarding to set out to make a record and have it turn out all the ways you want and more.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Rival Sons and Vintage Trouble. That would be a seriously high energy show!
Is there anything else you would like to add?'
Please reach out to us on our social media, everything is LaneChangeRocks. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the EP, our songs, and what you'd like to hear!
