Unsigned Spotlight: Ki:Theory

What’s your artist name, and how long have you been performing?

Ki:Theory.  I have been performing since 1998.

What’s the origin of that name?

I spent some time living in Japan in my twenties.  There, I met some friends who taught me about ki.  I was writing and recording the whole time I was over there and when I returned I decided to name the project Ki:Theory.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write all my songs except for ‘Bringing Me Down’ which is a collaboration between myself and Nashville singer/writer Ruelle.  When I write lyrics, I try to do so in a way that requires the listener to dig a little deeper into introspection to derive their own meaning from the larger concepts I explore.  Most of the ideas come from my own experiences in life, relationships and also derive from how I view the world and humanities place in it and the universe.  There are no particular themes I adhere to.  The topics are fairly wide ranging and always changing.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

After sound check…I usually try to find some time to be alone to relax and conserve energy.  Get dressed, slap fives with band and crew, shot of whiskey and it’s show time…

What has been the biggest highlight of your artistic career so far?

I have a few…touring with Phantogram and Purity Ring…Playing Bonnaroo, Getting to create a remix for Daft Punk on the Tron Reconfigured album.  Most recently having a song in the trailer and soundtrack for the movie “Ghost In The Shell” was pretty cool.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Nine Inch Nails…One of the best live bands around.  We would fit well with them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I have a new album ‘Silence’ dropping 5/5…Vinyl pre-order now at www.kitheory.com.
