Unsigned Spotlight: KinZie

KinZie is a rock band from Birmingham, Alabama. They make sad songs, they make mad songs, they make dad songs, but never release a bad song.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Parker - Drums
Thomas - Bass
Phil - Guitar and Vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to (insert band/artist name here)? How long has the band been around?

Prior to KinZie, Phillip was in an indie band called Bremen which lasted about 3 years roughly. Thomas is currently in Jesse Payne’s live band for about a decade and a go to recording/bass player for certain local artist. Parker has been in various Birmingham metal acts.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Three simple reasons why the name KinZie was chosen: 1) We like the sound of the name 2) We like the look when spelled like this 3) KinZie is easy to remember

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Phil will come up with a skeleton and present it to the band. We’ll workshop until we like the final product. Our current themes are basically acknowledging mental health and the world that surrounds us. We like to discuss point of views and situations for the most part.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

There’s so much music, but since we’ve been molding our sound to be Jazz and Punk, we’ve primarily have been listening to every sub genre lately.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Melt-Banana, Bloc party, and Adebisi Shank are huge influences on our sound. Phil got see Bloc Party as the OG lineup and that was particularly special for him.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Parker does a series of stretches before hand. Thomas will warm up his hands if we have time during sound check. Phil usually dons an 80s inspired workout clothes.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Thus far, it’s definitely being recognized by our city as a band to watch out for

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Unanimously, Dismemberment Plan is top choice

Is there anything else you would like to add?
