Unsigned Spotlight: Kevin Valentine

Kevin Valentine has always been a singer, a writer, and a listener. When his father would play music from the British Invasion, Kevin would always listen to the melodies, the lyrics, and the meanings of songs by especially the Beatles, the Monkeys, and the Rolling Stones. Now, Valentine produces, records, and performs music to strengthen his career. The Music industry is changing and Kevin Valentine wants to create music that can bring us all closer together.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Sam Rodberg - Bass, Synth Design

Kevin Hutchens - Keys, Composition

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Kevin Valentine?

Interestingly enough, I have never played in any bands before. The guys I’m playing with have and continue to play with Devin Dawson, Baylor Wilson,  Forrest Gospel Choir, North East Anonymous, Pheonix, Paul Childers and the Black Tie Affair, Alex Boyé, etc.

How long has the band been around?

The first show we played together was a year from last November.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Nope, Kevin Valentine is my name.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

In the past, I’ve been the sole writer and producer, but now we’ve started to all be a part of the creation of music. The songs have been about love lost, about love found, about the hopes and dreams you can have for someone. These topics are already changing a lot. There’s a lot to say.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

If you can truly listen to anything and everything, from Mozart to Beyonce, you can go to very amazing creative spaces. So many bands have influenced me, that I wouldn’t be able to say who has inspired me I usually just hear something and try to capture that with my music.

But if you want to know my “sound”, it’s more like a Drake/Deadmau5/Justin Timberlake cocktail on the rocks.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I wouldn’t say so.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Preparation usually involves singing, jumping up and down, flexing, and breathing exercises.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Biggest highlight was playing in Iowa City at Dance Marathon. Lots of people, Lots of fun.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I would tour with all of the bands, if I could. They’d probably be more on the dance/pop side of music though. I just want to meet everyone and see what drives them

Is there anything else you would like to add?

For me, music isn’t about the who It’s about the connection. It brings out the best in people. I only ever want to create music that brings people together.
